Okay well im going post this here because the 4780 section is for tech problems and the photo gallery is for better pictures.

Well anywho I was board today and went ahead and took apart my 4780! I know I know people usually do this when their warranty expires but I didn't.

Okay here are a bunch of miscellaneous pictures for the curious:

Pc card.

Where the fan should be but I took it out.

Speaker and fan plugs, as you can see their is another port for another fan.

Everyone?s favorite tv tuner.

LCD screen.

Where the expanded heat pipe should be but clevo wanted to be cheap.

NOW this pisses me off, their is an extra usb port on the left side not being used by anything but it's covered up.

Entire top view shown.

Top of the fan.

Bottom of the fan, which you can take apart and clean all of the stupid dust out off.

Have fun.

LOL thats odd, having a hidden USB port...

Is it possible to cut a hole for it? I mean, you already took it apart, maybe you should try?

Yeah I guess I will cut that thing off, I already ordered another chasis for it so if i screw up i can try try again.

No! Don't use that extra USB port...it will open up the tenth dimension and tear apart the space-time continuum. There is a reason for covering it up, you know!

is there a space portal in that usb port, like in the simpsons when marge went to clean behind the bookcase?

If thats the case, that would be cool, because you would become a 2-dimensional cartoon, and lets be honest, who wouldn't want to be a cartoon?

don't they usually use tape to cover up entries into wormholes? clevo must be cutting costs

your crazy man...but in a good way lol...makes you appreceate how they are gona get everything into the 8790 though eh...

In the main top down picture, I take it that's the radeon 9600 without so much as a small heat sink - talk about lazy, cheap mofos huh?

So in your opinion Beachbum, would it be hard to replace the LCD if one's warranty were to expire and you want a new screen for whatever reason?
hey Beachbum...

does that extra USB port align with the odd 'ridge' in the bottom black plastic where it reachs 'up' into the silver edge?

That part of the case is starts about 1/4" rearward from the rear edge of the PCMCIA slot and looks to be the length exactly of a USB port... which aggrivates me
along with the blanked out space for more heatsink capacity

**edit** from your pictures.. it looks like that raised black part IS exactly in front of the USB port... ARGH!! wow.... great design Clevo (or eurocom? see: r/d rumors)

hmmm, i think you've found something awesome. think of what this extra usb port can do.... imagine getting some el tape. which is tape that glows and uses the same technology as cold-cathode lighting. The el tape plugs into the internal usb port and lights up. so you can have your fans glow or go extreme and make your keyboard glow. I'll post a link for the el-tape with a usb connector cause i think i saw one the other day. I hope they have this internal usb port on the 5680!!! Nice find dude!

You gave me an idea! OMG I will use that extra usb port to power some led lights maybe around the k/B or something.

I've heard a lot about how Sagers use Mini-USB instead of Mini-PCI. Maybe that's a backup Mini-USB port?
I think Mini-USB is simply an internal header for a USB port... ie a series of pins and a plastic connector to snap an internal USB wire into...

that is a full on port for plugging an external USB device into!
beachbumm does yours have the internal usb wireless network card?? if not maybe thats the usb for it and the space where you think the heatpipes would go is where the wireless network card would go??

just a shot..
Kesh... the header fo the internal network card is right next to the CPU.. around under the F9 key, and that space where the heatpipes should extend to and there should be more heatsink and another fan (there are vents for another fan) is blocked by a mysterious black sheetmetal box

Thoughts on the mattter:
1. on the extra USB port, its probably on the same channel as the media readers (4780s do have a media reader?...) im looking and seeing the same case-juke on my 4080, wonder if theres one there too, its mentioned somewhere in the BIOS i think, possibly not active when the media reders are.
2. If its still convienent, whats the brand, model, and dimensions on that fan, i know the RAM fan is a loud generic piece of crap in mine, but i havent taken everything apart yet so i dont know the details to look into quality replacements.
3. laptop's video cards are in my experence _never_ cooled, actively or passively. in my previous laptop the M7 chip was located convienently under the WASD keys (ouch), but had 8mm of clearance over it, so i put 3 of those 6mm high copper chip coolers (the kind you use on RAM, that has 3M thermal tape on the back) on it, and it caused a tangible increase in performance.
4. im almost eager for my warranty to expire so i can explore and replace in here without fear.
