I disassembled my 4780! **PICS** - Page 2

Just from looking at the pictures, would it be possible to use the mystery internal USB port? It looks like the case just barely fits around it so by the time you put even the smallest connecter into the port, you would not be able to put the motherboard back in the case.

Those pictures are awsome, i've always wondered how they fit so much into something so small.

It looks like the port faces outwards. Why not make a small hole in the case wall and use the port like any other USB port on the machine?

I got a new theory on why the extra Heatsink/heatpipe area is blocked out

As they predicted an upgrade to this chassis (to the 8790), they foresaw the need for more real estate for cooling of the Prescott, and put that space there with this generation, so they wouldn't have to rework anything in the future... leaving the 4780 with as much heat management equipment as the 4080 can handle... which they arn't upgrading (yet) the 4080 line to the Prescott.

I imagine that the 8790 will be using this extra space to cool down the Prescott to the same temperatures and fan usage is the 4780, dispite the more heat output of the Prescott

They could have put that 8790 stuff into the 4780, but they didn't want to make any one of these chassi' any quieter than the others, so they would all be equal, dispite the difference in heat outputs (between the 4xxx & the 8790)

Just something to keep in mind..

that USB port is (probably) shared with the modem (also USB)....
if a USB device is 'shared'... does that mean only one can be physically hooked up at a time, or one softly (computer pyschologically) be used a time.. ie no 56k and mousing on that internal port simoltaneously

I'm pretty sure that the card reader is a USB device that is replacing the USB slot that was present in the 4780. I still wish the 4780 could have 2 processor fans though. Maybe it should be offered in a possible motherboard upgrade package for the 4780.

OMG beachbum, may I ask why? Was there a problem with your unit?
bubbleman, that's like asking a mountain climber why he just risked his life to climb Everest.
beachbum is exactly that....a mountain climber...he venture far and wide in order to do things the normal man would never dream of...man this gives me the drive to take apart my 4760 once the warranty is up.

hey beach - how about rerouting and wiring up an unpowered, full-size firewire port in the void and covering up the front one? That right side would be great for ports. Any thoughts?
won't that cause a black hole
Hey beachbum, when you opened your case did you see one of those four fan openings closed? one of my fan openings on the bottom of the case looks closed to me.

The one on the very right side is closed up, its where that extended heatsink is supposed to be but it isnt becouse clevo wanted to be cheap on us.
is there any way we could get the extended heat sink or another fan to go in there? seems that is why there is an excess of heat in the case.

I dont think so, maybe one of us could contact clevo or sager and see if we can aquire that heatsink.
