yeah, seagate, which had much better reliability than maxtor, bought maxtor. for the seagate brand drives, they are still made by seagate and have good quality, so having a maxtor drive fail != seagate isnt as good a company.
i'm kind of a seagate fan, but according to benchmarks and reviews, i think the WD has slightly better performance (i forget where/when i read it), but i'd still vote for seagate. if you buy a retail box (not sure with the oem's) you get a 5-year warranty, and last time i was aware, WD only has 3.
i personally have 4 seagates in active use (500gb, 400gb, 160gb 2.5", 100gb 2.5") and havent had any problems (the 400 is really old, it must be like 3-5 years old by now). the actual reason for happening to have so many is that the 100 came with a laptop, the 160 was/is the biggest notebook drive, the 500gb was $180 total, and the 400gb was $200 total (back in the day when drives were expensive and that was a good price). come to think of it, i dont really have any WD drives to make any comparisons to, but the seagates are very quiet.
