are there any canadian distributors for sager laptops?

There is one, http://www.eurocom.ca , but after you check out their prices, you'll be ordering from the states. My 5660 from them is like over $4000 CDN. I got mine from PCTorque for $3000 and some change CDN.

Also, if you're wondering, there is no Duty on computer equipment from the states, i called Canada customs and they told me that which really set my mind at ease ordering from the states. I had my computer within a few days of ordering.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay tax either.

What???? I think I'm going to sue someone! I paid taxes for TWO of my laptops at the Canadian borders!!! Please elaborate for me what the customs guys told you, because I think I'm going to have to call them myself. 15% tax is not pocket change.

That is not true. You do have to pay all applicable CDN taxes, just not duties.

Strange, I never paid tax for ordering online before.
Except once I had to pay duty.

EDIT: badluckboy, did you pay the tax+duty when you received the laptops or did it appear on your credit card bill?

Then you got lucky or the people you ordered it from put a zero dollar value on it.

UPS collected tax at my door when I got mine last week.

Did you pay by cash? Also how much was the tax (I guess around $350)?

Well one I ordered and had delivered by UPS, and they charged me not only taxes to clear it through customs, but also a $55 "brokerage fee." I have since then stopped using UPS.

The other one; I was coming into Canada and the customs guy stopped me and made me pay duties on it, even though it was obviously used etc... He gave me a receipt and told me to laminate it and keep it with my laptop when I travel. I argued and argued, to no avail. He told me "that's the law."

Not to mention that they don't have the Radeon 9000 or 533Mhz FSB in the 5600P Monte Carlo yet (aka sager 5650,so there is no 5660 equivelent)
The price difference between only the 2.53Ghz and 2.66Ghz cpu is $350 CAD($220 US)
Their ram is also way expensive!Basicly, they charge an almost fair price for the base configuration, then charge a huge premium to add anything else!
The only thing going for them is that they offer up to four 5400rpm 60GB drives (how the hel!?) inthe "EUROCOM 8880E Dream Machine II"(aka Sager 8886).
Their extended warranty is also a bit cheaper.

EUROCOM 8880E Dream Machine II
2.8Ghz
1GB SDRAM
2x40Gb 5400 RPM HD
DVD/CDRW combo drive
CD ROM
3 year warranty
No MP3 player
No TV tuner
----------------------
$6509 before tax (CAD)

Sager 8886
2.8Ghz
1GB SDRAM
2x40Gb 5400 RPM HD
DVD/CDRW combo drive
CD ROM
3 year warranty
----------------------
4475 (cash price) before tax (CAD)

I half half a mind to email eurocom and clue them in to the fact that it is almost 2003!
And this is the best (only) deal in Canada for a comparible model!
It makes me want to get into the resale biz!Sheeesh!
end rant/

That would be nice.
It would also be good to know how sales tax and duty are charged/paid when placing an order via bank wire or money order. Is postal money order from Canada in US dollars even accepted by pctorque.com?This is somewhat unclear in the Policies section. Also how is a situation handled when a recipient lives outside of the normal UPS service range and the parcel needs to be forwarded by regular post?I had such a parcel valued at $40 US delayed two weeks because I owed customs $7 for tax.(by the time I figured out where it was, sent them my money order and received the package=two weeks)
To the best of my knowledge,my local PO was supposed to bill me for the customs tax,but the fact that a courier was involved seemed to complicate things.
It sure gets complicated making large $ (or any) purchases from the US,especially when you don't have a credit card, live in a remote area and don't know for sure how much customs wants,or how to pay them.
(although I would assume it's 14.5% for B.C. GST & PST and a "brokerage fee".)
I guess I could just call the customs office, and hope I get someone who knows what they're talking about. But do they ever?

My best advice is to either expect a full tax to be applied, and be willing to pay it. Or, have a friend, family member bring it to you/ship it and hope that customs don't charge you for it.

With UPS delivery, you are guaranteed to pay duties and their stupid brokerage fees. I've had to pay this on all types of electronics delivered by UPS, yet I got some of the same equipment by regular post without any inspection/duties/delays/brokerage fees. My advice is do not use UPS. Yes its inconvenient but it could save you a bundle.

And yes, we need the laws to be clarified. I travel a lot to the US and back and other than that time I got an idiot for a customs official, I was never bothered. Every other time they saw my laptop and didn't bother me. They are inconsistent for sure!

I went to UPS.com and researched bit and found this.

http://www.ups.com/canada/using/soft...oms_rates.html

According to this if it's UPS Express, Express Plus, or Expedited Services you don't have to pay duty!
Although there's still tax involved

Sounds like you definitely want to get it Air mail (UPS Worldwide express) so you don't have to deal with the customs brokerage bull****.
