aaronjb's Arima W830-DA Review

Ok, second time of posting this since IE logged me out earlier.. grr.

So - I finally have my hands on it And now I'm back from work I can actually post my first impressions, initial pictures and initial benchmark

So, pictures first!

All boxed up - no fancy AlienWare box here, in fact the box is still badged Arima:

Opening the box:

All spread out on the floor - it was well packaged, although the CDs were actually rattling around in the large box when I got it:

Ah, laptoppy goodness! The Evesham badge is really tacky and cheap, however, which is a great shame

Ooh ooh it's out!:

Here it is, sat on my CoolerMaster NotePal:

It hangs over the back quite a way, but thanks to the NotePal's curved base area there's still an air gap:

First boot!:

(well, ok, not really.. I booted it up and played at work first )

So, my impressions:

Build

It seems well built - kinda heavy, although my only basis for comparison is my old Sony Vaio, which I specifically bought as an ultra-thin ultralight laptop, so it's probably not the greatest base for comparison

If I had to compare to another 17" laptop it would be my colleagues Dell XPS M1710, and I think this is slightly heavier, although not a great deal - but then it contains two HDDs and two GPUs so it's actually surprisingly light really!

Screen

Oh, the screen! It's gorgeous - bright, clear, great contrast, lovely glossy finish although off it has a kind of 'orange peel' surface if you see what I mean..

Not a single dead pixel, though, w00t! There is a little light leakage though, but it only appears on the lower 1/16" to 1/8", which to my mind is perfectly acceptable and a lot better than my old 14" Vaio - but then the screen tech is four years newer

Temperature

Surprisingly cool, actually. The wrist rest area stays at room temperature, and the CPU idles in the mid 40's, which is pretty good considering it's 30C in here!

I saw a peak of the mid 70's while I was at work running 3DMark, and the air out of the rear vents got quite hot, though not unbearably so. The only thing is that work is airconditioned, so it will be interesting to see the peak temperatures at home.

No GPU temps yet - when I started the nvtemplogger it started beeping (the standard PC beep) loud enough to be heard on the next floor, so I shut that off pretty quick at work!

Speed

Well all I've done so far is a single 3DMark05, however with the initial build of Win MCE complete with all the bloatware (antivirus, an automatic problem logger from Evesham, Norton Ghost etc) running I clocked a fantastic 9600 score:

So, now I'm off to run more benchmarks - which means building a minimal XP install and blowing the current MCE install away.. which means I need to make sure I have all the right drivers first! Then I'll pull the video and main board BIOS' off for you AW folks after trying coolbits and soforth, and we can go from there

One thing I have noticed - IE is pants I'm so used to Firefox now..

[edit] I thought I should probably add;

The reason this is here, and rather than in one of the general Notebook forums is that the Evesham Quest Nemesis, which is actually the Arima W830 is the same ODM laptop as the AlienWare m9700, so it's probably of most interest to those looking at the Alienware - since Evesham only ship to the UK, and the majority of members here are US based

Plus, HH said it was OK

Nice one bruva!

I'd love to see how it compares aginst your collegues Dell XPS M1710 . IMO they are pretty evenly matched, but with the Dual Graphics cards, 64bit CPU and RAIDed HDD, it might just give it the edge. It will be interesting to see which one ends up on top in 3DMark

did you load coobits?

is OC locked?

but most of all, please do me this one favor,

check the BIOS, can you disable AMD power now, or anything related to batt savings.

Great laptop, congratz

You know I'm going to whup your ass boy Now we best stop that there, or we'll get the thread locked due to the ol' Dell vs. Alienware thing (Just for folks info - Jos is the colleague, and it's just a friendly challenge.. no blood will be spilt.. much.. honest )

Not yet - I'm going to do that once I load XP Pro on here, instead of XP MCE..

There's virtually nothing in the BIOS - I mean, really.. nothing I didn't see anything related to PowerNow! or battery saving features, pretty much just date, time, boot order and.. well that's about your lot.

Yep, just checked again - disappointingly empty Boot order, RAID & WiFi options and time & date, that's yer lot.

same as the AW then... thx for checking

Congrats on the system aaronjb! Nice rig you got yourself there.

Bummer... I was hoping the Evesham would come with a bios that allowed shutting off cool and quiet...

I wonder what bios the guy that did the m9700 review at hothardware was using. He was able to oc with coolbits on the engineering sample...

I'm also curious about the amd drivers that came installed on the Evesham. If it's the Athlon instead of turion driver, it probably means Arima is shipping the base unit with those installed.

Oh, did you get the tv tuner? I'm curious to know if you can find drivers for it to use with XP pro. The drivers AW uses are MCE specific I believe...

Thanks Magnum

HH - yep, it's definitely the Athlon driver.. In fact, if you run the Arima driver CD (yep, the driver CD is branded Arima, not Evesham) then it even suggests I should remove my Turion driver and install the Athlon one.. methinks not! But yes, it looks like Arima is shipping these things with an incorrect base driver set, and Alienware simply didn't pick up on it - easy to miss if you're not looking at what drivers are getting installed (plus it is basically an Athlon, after all.)

I haven't tried coolbits yet, so that may still work to OC the GPUs - I won't know until I've finished rebuilding the laptop as I made the rash error of blowing away the MCE partition and then realising I needed to burn a custom XP CD with the RAID drivers included.. (I blame Jos entirely for that one )

As soon as it's up and running again I'll try coolbits et al - might be tomorrow at work now, as it's getting late here again.

Thanks for the review Looking forward to more info. when you can. I'm thinking when I order mine I may ask them to sort out the drivers first!

Thanks aaronjb...

There must be a difference between the bios at some level though, either system or vid cards because I understand standard vid drivers won't work on the AW setup.

I assume you can just use drivers downloaded from Nvidia, or does Evesham issue their own drivers?

I believe they were just standard nVidia drivers - they certainly weren't branded, and didn't appear to be missing any options.. 84.xx series if I recall correctly (I'll check on the driver CD in a mo, XP is installing as we speak).

I don't beleive Evesham issue their own drivers - certainly they have no 'downloads' area that I can find (which is slightly disappointing, to be honest).

well, after you've got XP up and running and your RAID drivers installed, lets hear how it does in 3DMark:P and maybe if you get some games runnin on it today, that would be cool to hear how they're runnin for you

I don't think I'll get any games on tonight - it's nearly 1am here and I'm at work tomorrow.. well.. today!

Might not get 3DMark done either, but we'll see..

In the mean time, some photos I took:
Inside the beast:

The hard drive caddies - they're part of the covers it seems, so it seems likely that if you only order one drive all you'll need is four screws to add another:

Oh ya, there's a PSX hiding around here someplace too..

Right - a bit of news:

The Evesham allows me to install standard nVidia graphics drivers.. So I installed the TweaksRUs Xtreme-G Mobile 91.37 drivers and they allow me to overclock quite happily in the standard nVidia control panel..

I didn't crank the clocks up much - and sadly the Xtreme-G drivers appear to have lost me some 500 3DMark points! Either that or something else is fscked up in my XP Pro install, so I need to look at that again tomorrow.

However, it's 2am here now, and I'm going to be dead on my feet at work.. so I'm off to get some shuteye

hey aaronjb - thanks for the great info on your machine...

I am a bit dissapointed with you 3dmark scores. I really expected them to be at least in the low 10,000's from the factory. Keep us updated as you work with it.

Hammerhead asked this, but I didn't see an answer. Did you get the TV tuner with yours?

I think its actualy only overclocking 1 card, not both. Try disabling 1 card, run 3dmark. Then over clock the 1 card, run 3dmark and see if it improves.

Heads up everyone, I just got an email from an engineer at Alienware and they're insisting the Athlon drivers are the right drivers for this platform, not the turion drivers. I suspect it might have something to do with the SLI.

I'm hoping to talk to them on the phone tomorrow to clear this up, and of course I'll post the info I get here.

And aaronjb, I'm assuming since you are able to use the standard vid drivers from Nvidia, either your system or the card bios' are different than ours. Another Evesham customer posted the 256m vid card bios here, and it's the same as is on the AW cards, so I assume it's the system bios that checks the vid card drivers...

Dude, that sucks... I just finally got my crapy to run correctly

How can the original drivers be better when we are getting better scores off of 3dmark with the new drivers???

Hammerhead - we all wait to hear from you...

I don't know, but I'll pass along the information as soon as I get it.

I know marker01 was having issues on battery while gaming with the multiplyer jumping up and down. I wonder if it was doing the same thing with the Athlon drivers on there...
