I can categorically state that the lockdown isn't in the Alienware-supplied video drivers, as I downloaded the AW 84.74 drivers this afternoon and tried them on a fresh XP install - CoolBits enabled the OC options and I could happily overclock, though only 20Mhz or so Honestly, it's not worth the trouble, 20MHz nets you absolutely nothing frame-rate wise.

Do you mean coolbits limits the overclock, or you could only overclock 20MHz before instability?

Were you overclocking before through the advanced properties with drivers you got somewhere else?

Coolbits lets me overclock, however you are forced to hit 'Test settings' before you can apply with the current nVidia drivers - hitting 'Test' when I've had more than a 20MHz or so overclock just results in "Test failed".

20MHz overclock is somewhat unstable too, unless I'm in the airconditioned office.

I've only done my overclocking with Coolbits (which just enables the nVidia overclocking page) with all the drivers I've tried - 84.xx and 91.xx

hmmm, maybe the cooling in this platform isn't adequate for higher oc. That's disappointing.

What is the highest stable oc you've been able to run?

The ones that I posted my best 3DMark with - 380/520 on the GPU (5MHz & 20MHz overclock) and an FSB of ~214MHz.

Not much of an overclock at all - in fact not really worth bothering with IMHO, the processor overclock was what made all the difference.

Maybe my cards are just borderline and the AW ones will be better..

I doubt the cards will be different. Maybe the voltage to the gpu's is just enough to be stable at stock clocks. I understand they did tweak this system for all they could for battery. There's nothing in the bios I guess, so I doubt you can up the voltage to the vid cards...

It could be the voltage (which, you're correct, you can't change in NiBitor on our cards) - or of course I might just have gotten a card or two that doesn't like overclocking.. It's very much the luck of the draw with overclocking, after all.

Having SLi on or off doesn't seem to make any difference to the max reported stable speed in my case.

Still - I did some burn-in tests last night then switched off to let everything cool to ambient, and today my load temps have dropped probably 5-8C on what they were last night after I'd first applied the AS5, which is a nice drop if you ask me.

I have my cards overclocked to 425/605. The maximum allowed fq are 437/~640 but i have experienced artifacts etc. I have also experienced cases where xp were booting with screen off. I had to reset it and reboot with "previous known settings that worked" in order to make it boot properly. So far i use 425/605 with no problems at all.

I don't remember, do you have an Evesham?

And do you have the 256 or 512 vid cards? It might just be that the 512 cards aren't very overclockable...

What drivers are you using?
256 vid cards, 84.15 forceware version. I bought it in greece, it doesnt come as "alienware" or "evesham" here but with a different name.

Maybe the 256 cards are more 'oc friendly' - less RAM heat maybe? Not sure if it's fewer physical RAM chips or not..

Or perhaps I just got two 'dud' cards when it comes to overclocking - we all know o/c capabilities are a bit of a lottery, sadly.

In the words of the immortal Scotty - the engines just cannae tek it cap'n.

So anyone tried GRAW on one of these rigs? Can you run it in 1920 x 1200 at reasonable settings without mouse lag????

I bought mine from Evesham computers in the UK.. AFAIK they don't ship outside the UK, though.

After an 0.1V overvolt and BIOS-mod How To Here), new scores:

3DMark05 - 10311 @ 1024x768, noAA, no Ansitropic, GPU @ 423/602 & 1.1V, FSB @ 207.37 in SysTool
Driverset: nVidia nForce 6.80, AW 84.74 nVidia drivers, AMD Athlon driver 1.3.2.0

3DMark06 - 5531 @ 1280x1024, noAA, no Ansitropic, GPU @ 423/602 & 1.1V, FSB @ 207.37MHz in SysTool.

(Please ignore the fact that the clocks are back at standard in that - I'm teh n00b and accidentally hit the 'No Overclock' option while taking the screenshot.. d'oh!)

Has anyone tried overclocking the 7900GS as a single card on the m9700?

I did one run by accident, can't recall the clocks but it came in a 7300 for the single card in 3dMark05.
