XPS M1210 LCD thread. - Page 18

Order Date - 2/21/07
LCD Manufacturer - Samsung SEC3157 (powerstrip)
AV Package

Notes:
At first, I agreed that its the middle quality, but after awhile of moving up and down trying to get the best angle, it was driving me nuts so I started to have second thoughts about it.
It was like, one angle, the top of the screen was too light, then the other way, now the top looks good, but the bottom is too light, then the bottom looks good but the top is to much contrast. arrrrrrrgggggg!!!

Thankfully, I came across my link again for this topic and reinstalled powerstrip. I goofed around with it and found if I turn the gamma way down (like 0.6) the colors are MUCH brighter, and I dont have to put the screen back so far to get the same result.
Now its pretty good, where everything comes out ok, we can settle the battle here I think lol. We'll have to see what longer use brings forth.
I think I'll be happy with it now.

Hi!

I'm new here, I'm just following this thread from the first page... wow what a long discussion about the things that I didn't realise the difference of it until my M1210 LCD crack last night hit by my mobile phone. It was horrible and nightmare for me. But it was my fault anyway...

I just bought this from DELL Malaysia on December last year and it's still under warranty. But the worst thing is now I'm in UK furthering my study. The technical support emailed me just now stated that the complete cover programme only cover where the system is purchased, which is from Malaysia.

Now, I really need to know how you guys order it? How much it cost? Can I replaced it by myself to reduce the cost (hey.. i'm a student with limited amount of money... and I don't mine if the warranty void cause the warranty only cover me if I'm in Malaysia only...). Is there is any technical writing to replace it or to DIY it. If no, please any gurus here with some experience write it down briefly for the sake of our beloved so-called eXtreme Performance System M1210. Guys, please give me some advice.

p/s: My crack LCD is SEC3157 and from the feedback I'm looking forward to have AUO3214

Cheers,

Hi! me again...

I found on this site on how to change LCD screen but it's on Compaq notebook. Is it the same with M1210?

UPDATE II:

Okay, so i got my 3rd laptop replacement the other week. It's an AUO screen! Yes, now i'm happy and have sent the other 2 back to Dell.

So far my conclusions:

Toshiba screen sucks: colour isn't as vibrant or saturated. Big difference in quality from the AUO.
Samsung: comes in overly bright and with a lot of light leakage, but with the correct adjustments, it is a decent screen.
AUO: so far the best of the lot in terms of brightness and colour saturation.

Purchased my 1210M in Australia, and ended up getting the Toshiba screen. And in a word is horrible.
In my case it seems the vertical viewing angle isn't even enough to be able to see the entire screen at its optimum angle - best way to demonstrate this is to set a single colour background, which at the best of times looks like a colour graduation made in photoshop.

More importantly, the response time is attrocious - i estimate its in the viscinity of 25-30ms; my Compaq X1000 with 15.4" WXGA screen is much, much better.

I'll call Dell support as soon as I have some time to see if i can get the screen replaced with an AUO one.

Can someone who feels satisfied with their screen post a pic with an all black and/or red image (using dead pixel locater or whatever)?

Mine has the Samsung screen, and while I think the screen itself is decent there just seems to be a lot of light leakage straight across the bottom, and only at the bottom. Basically I'm using the black Vista taskbar, and when I have it on the bottom it looks gray, at the top it looks black.

I'm trying to determine if this is normal, because it's driving me crazy.

My m1210 does that its basically lighter at the bottom and darker at the top. Its not the only notebooks Ive seen do this tho. My HP and Gateway models had same issue. Only my Sager had a great screen of notebooks I owned but it died 2 times so I ditched it.

I wouldnt think its a problem. They obviously used lower quality screens on these dells. You can try to hassle dell with it if you think its worth your time.

My issue with my dell now is an odd noise that goes away when I turn off my network card. I had dell replace the network card but it still does it. Im thinkin this intel network card is just junk. I had issues with it connecting with my dlink router anyway.

They offered to replace the entire motherboard but Im not so sure thats the issue.

Just got my Toshiba LCD replaced with an AUO one (got a replacement arranged in 4 business days, good on you Dell ) and tbh, its maybe 5% better, if that in terms of colours, don't know if its any brighter, but the response time is a bit better. So basically, if you have a bad screen, well, they all are. All the screens are a long way from something like a 15.4" Sony Vaio with the reflective coating like youd find in an FE series.

I have the same problem everytime is it like a high pitched noise? It comes and goes when the wireless is on. Its gone when the network card is off.

Hi all, I just wanted to throw in my comments/questions on the whole XPS M1210 LCD screen issue. I recently purchased a refurbished M1210, and immediately felt that something just didn't feel right with the display (my last laptop was an Inspiron 700m, so I was used to having a really nice screen). This was before I even knew there were three LCDs for the M1210. I checked and found out that I had the Toshiba LCD58E, and after reading this thread, I contacted Dell and they replaced my LCD with the AUO3214 after I specifically requested it.

Honestly, I didn't see too much of a difference. I still have some light leakage problems. Color contrast is maybe a little better, but I have a feeling that text doesn't look as sharp (it's hard to tell now that I don't have the LCD58E to compare against). I've tried messing with turning ClearType on/off and playing with different fonts, and sometimes I can get it to look fine, and other times text just looks less sharp than I'd like (it was completely crisp on the 700m's screen, at least with ClearType turned off).

I am running Vista Home Premium, and the NVIDIA control panel that comes with the 7400 Go drivers available from Dell (as far as I know there are no official Vista drivers for the 7400 Go on NVIDIA's web site yet) does not have a lot of the features that others have mentioned, such as contrast and digital vibrance adjustments. Are those only available with the XP drivers? Do they make a significant difference?

Also, has anyone yet successfully put their 700m/710m screen into their M1210? I saw a few people say they wanted to try it but that the interface was different and that it was not possible.

Thanks!

see this thread: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=167193

On a separate note, I am wondering if there has been an improvement in the screens on these machines? It has been nearly a year since I returned mine, and I was hoping they would get the hint and FIX things!
yeah i am interested in putting the 700m/710m screen in if possible too... assuming it doesnt mess things up really bad i'd give it a shot.
Man, just leave the 700m as a nice memory, and move on. Too bad Dell cheaped out on the M1210 screens, especially for the "high end" M1210 line. My only pending improvement is to go back to XP MCE.

i dont want a 700m i just want the screen
post #355 of 370
has anyone done the 700M screen on a m1210 or is it a dead end?
Update: I have documented more or less exact instructions on how to fix the screen on the m1210. Visit http://m1210screenfix.blogspot.com/

I ordered my XPS1210 about a month ago and had vista ultimate put on it. Using the Geforce 7400go gfx card i found my screen was extremely washed out and didnt look crisp enough. Anyways had Dell replace the screen but i dont know which screen they used...will have to have a look at it later tonight. But i found the drivers for vista on the 7400 card were terrible, its missing alot of the features. Last week i put win xp pro on the XPS1210 and using the win xp drivers, you do get alot of those features back ie digital vibrance and gamma settings. Sadly my screen still looks like utter crap so will be getting in touch with Dell later today to have a moan about it and get them to fix it either with a better screen or perhaps downgrading the card to the intel one. As my bro has the exact same laptop i have but with the intel gfx card and he uses vista ultimate and i have to admit his screen looks gorgeous.

so you're saying its all the video cards fault? I highly doubt it to tell ya the truth... but i will research this myself to see...
naaa its definitely not ALL the video cards fault and i don't think thats what he was saying, but he's definitely right in saying its bad drivers as far as vista goes, cause my M1210's screen looks fine on XP after i adjusted the gamma on it, but before it was washed out beyond belief.

I think the consensus would be that if you use vista, the drivers are bad, and the screen get even WORSE than it already is...
