Dell s XPS m1210 or HP Pavilion dv5000 , Plz help me decide :(

hi , i want to buy a laptop which is capable of playing good enough games and also to work on it somewhat ie some programming and that sorta stuff.
I did some research and really liked two laptops ie dell XPS m1210 and hp pavilion dv 5000.
Some queries i have about dell are:

* Is 12.1" Widescreen good enough for a laptop for general use, as i will be completely shifting from my PC to laptop for work or surfing or playing games only on that laptop.

Some queries i have about HP are:-

* With the same configuration the dv 5000 will cross the weight to around 3kg , will it be too much for regular use ?
* Will there be heat issues in dv series with same configuration of XPS?

I would really be thankful to all the people who reply and help me in my search for the right kinda laptop.
I m right now in final year of engineering and want a laptop to atleast work with me for a couple of years
Thankyou all for replyn in advance

I'm not sure about the HP laptop but for the XPS M1210 I can say this...

I have an XPS M1210 and I am going to be using it for schoolwork. I will be takin it too and from school and using it both on campus and at home. My primary use for it will be to take notes and to do some programming on it (I'm taking Web Development courses). So far I am very pleased with it, I was a little concerned about its size and whether or not I'd be productive on it but after playing with it I know I can do just about all my work on this laptop. I must also say, however, that I have a Dell Inspiron 9300. When I'm at home I'll hop on the i9300 since it has a 17" screen plus I use a 20.1" external monitor which I use in Dual Screen Mode for most of my programming that I do.

So my recommendation to you is... If you choose the XPS M1210 then I would highly recommend an external monitor that you can use while your at home. This way you can work in Dual Screen Mode with your code in one screen (ie external monitor) and the program itself on another screen (ie your laptop monitor).

Hope this helps...

all that money wasted on a puny 12.1 inch screen, such a shame. you may as well just use a pda.

Go to your local shop and see the different screen sizes and select the screen size for you.
I've had 15,14, & 12 inch laptops.
I keep on going to the 12 inch laptop cause of portability.
I play games on my desktop. My laptop does have a few games, but non that require massive resources (CIV 4, Duke Nukem, MDK2).
I have an MSi s271 and it works like a charm.
Before that i had a Dell 700m.
I actually do most of my papers on the laptop rather than the pc. (19 inch Samsung LCD and home).
Dells are stable PC's.
You can always reduce the video ram on the dell and it will produce less heat. I had one HP laptop, and though the design was awesome it was a poor performer.
Stick with dell. unless you want to go MSI or Asus.

Just to let you know, the xp1250 is a bit bulky. At least i thought that.

12" as a mainstream laptop is not suggested.

It can atleast be considered if you have a desktop or laptop for your otherwork.

I am currently using a compar R4000 which weights 7.85pounds(around 3.5kgs). It is heavy.

and I am in the market for a new laptop. I checked all screen sized and 13.3-14" seems to be the best option.

I would suggest you to look at the HP, unless you have another desktop or notebook.

Sirius Black,

You need to read thru this thread on the various GPU's used to find out which GPU will be best for you.

If you can I would do some hands on research first before buying a 12' screen. I played with one at a Dell Kiosk and I felt it was TO small. I would give the dv2000t a look also.

dv2000t is pretty small , portable.

Downside is I think it's got a weak GPU, important if you want to game.. or want to run Vista later.

here's a write up on the dv2000t:

Funny you say that because right after posting that I ordered a dv5000t (loaded) and will be refusing delivery of my dv2000t, I agree it's a little on the small side. What's one more extra pound when it comes to carrying it, it's not like I'll be carrying it everyday, just once and awhile, it will sit in the house more then it will be taken out.

So what I loose the camera and remote option, like if I was going to be sittin 30 feet away from the laptop or something.

Do you know what really bothered me about the dv2000t ....the sponge click on the touchpad and it's bevelled so you finger actually slides off it, also it's a long stroke. The other thing was the not so bright letters on the keypad, I know all petty but it would of annoyed me. The fingerprint thing was another annoyance.

So yeah if your going to be lugging a laptop around everyday all day I would go with a 12" or 14" but for occasional out the house occurasances I would go with a 15". Sorry for thread jacking am so excited that I changed my order.

Double posts are easy to do, and sometimes it is not possible to check back. This site sometimes stops responding altogether.. Or gets REALLY slow...

My appologies for my late reply

Its funny how things can change and turn out in the end.
Thanks to all the posts and information at notebookforum.com i decided to go ahead with , no not HP . its not even dell xps m1210 but its Asus s96j.

Prime reasons i did that were :
1. I wanted something to do almost all my work and shift on completely frm desktop , hence small screen of xps was not the solution for meh.
2. Go 7400 as some1 stated very well ,isnt meant for realtime good gaming. So iw anted something bigger and better then this.Ie atleast 7600 or X1600.Asus s96j was the solution for it for meh , which wasnt being provided in either dell or hp.

It weighs around 2.9 kgs , thats the only drawback it has , along with minor issues of bad speakers which arent much ova concern to me

Thx all for their stuff at notebookforums.com , after readin which i could make a better decision
