Dell Laptop recalled for Safety Issues

Thread Starter
I just got off the phone with Dell. My XPS Gen 2 had a fan that stopped working and a slight burnt plastic smell. The guy said it was a safety issue and wanted a permanent replacement sent out to me. The guy said I would get an equivalent or better ( XPS M1710? )I was just curious if anyone has been down this road/know what I can expect.

In addition, I was planning on updating a couple parts on my next laptop (which seems to be happening sooner than I had anticipated). Does anyone have experience with updating components (maybe paying the difference) or is Dell stubborn in these situations? Would Dell even be willing to exchange my laptop for a desktop (cost of laptop transferred to cost of desktop)?

I'm kind of suprised with everything and I want to make sure that the replacement laptop is exactly what I want, not what Dell thinks I should get.
Anyone have any advice?

Thanks,
Aero

I noticed a while back that my XPS smells of burning plastic on the right hand vent, I wonder what dell will say if I call up??

Well to add to it just banged an email off to dell UK, I paid extra for a years warranty and I am still in the first year, just looking at a new system and its about £1700ukp I paid £2300 for mine when I got it so I will see what they say

Thats what happened to my m170, the fan started going bad, it started to smell, and now it rarely stays on under high load... still waiting a replacement from Dell. They'll definitely help you out if you're persistent.

Bara686, how long have you been waiting for a replacement? What laptop did they say they the replacement will be? Also, what did you have to go through with Dell? Sorry, for all the questions, I'm curious and I'm trying to figure out with to expect.

just on the phone now, they want to get it in for 7 days, no way i paid for extended warranty!

looks like my fan has died now as it wont go round at all, not good.

there going to get an engineer out to look at it.

It's standard procedure for Dell to send a customer a replacement system when there is reason to suspect the system is a fire/electrocution hazard. Not surprising given all the negative press Dell has been getting from bloggers and the entirety of the internet.

well the engineer called me today he is on his way before 1!

playing some games last night it hit 94 on I8Kfan so that's close on 100, I am going to say I am concerned that the GPU is getting damaged! I must have been worse when it was really hot here and thats why it was stuttering so much in games, I never noticed the fan was not going as I8Kfan still thought it was going for some strange reason,

We will see what he says when he comes.

Well Dell have changed the fan and its working now, but the GPU is still sitting at about 70 and reaching 98 while playing a game!

I think the GPU is on the way out, luckily they are coming back tomorrow to swap the motherboard and the graphics card!

Do they have lots of 6800 ultra's instock I hope they dont bring a plain 6800! eek!

Dell called me a couple days ago to comfirm the replacement. I sent them an email about it, but haven't received a response yet. Hopefully Dell with get the replacement to me quickly and efficiently (maybe with Merom?).

If they exchange parts, it would have to be better or equal to the originial part that you purchased, so I wouldn't expect a plain 6800. Hopefully they get your computer issues solved.

well they brought the motherboard and 6800 ultra and it said "REFURBISHED" all over the box, I'm not happy that its still hitting 85 and its quite cool here, full chat for a few hours gaming and it could be at 90+ core clock down is 101, last week it was 30 here and it could have been hitting 100+ all the time playing games.

Just waiting for a call from Dell now to see what they are going to do as they said they will change the laptop, oh well lets see what they say but no way will I accept refurbed stuff, its still less than 1 year old.

Well Dell's customer care seems to be very good, they are going to replace it with a new 1710, no argument, I guess that's why the last 2 companies I have worked at buy Dell all the time, and I recommended Dell to 2 friends who brought them.
