Choppy gaming on M1710

Hello everyone!

I recently adquired a XPS M1710, T2500, 2GB 667,100GB 7200RPM,256 MB7900GS, XP Home Edition.

The first impresion I had when I turned it on and started windows was that it wasn't as fast as was expecting. Then I decided to do a full format/reinstall.

Now It's faster (but still not what I was expecting of that specs).

My real concern is about gaming. I tried Fifa 2006 and World Cup 2006 and they run a little bit choppy. They run choppy even at the EA Sports LOGO and the intro. I thought it was some kind of drivers issues, but I've installed any driver I could found over there, from Dell, Nvida, laptopvideo2go, xtreme g... That happens either on low and high resolutions. They run exactly the same way (except for the quality of image of course, talking about gameplay)

The games runs better on my wife HP with GMA950 (on lower resolution of course).

So, do you have any recomendations?. I repeat, it's a little bit choppy, not too much. Any driver version? over clocking? I really don't know what else to do...

Thank you guys

hecluro

Did you clean up the old drivers before you reinstalled the new ones? When it's choppy are you on battery power or AC?

hello wallypa

Always on AC, always cleaned up (driverCleaner).
By the way, the only things I have currently installed on the laptop are: sound drivers, video drivers and the game (I'm writing from another PC)

Are you o/cing the video card???? - the current clock speed on these cards is very low and can be given a major boost with a little O/cing.

Make sure you arent on battery and that your running on the max performance or equal power setting. Also a 3dmark 05 or 06 score to make sure their isnt a problem with the graphics card may help. What resolution are you playing at?

Make sure you install your Intel chipset driver.

Hi everyone... thanks for the replies

This is the 2nd time I did a complete reinstall. The first time I installed all the required drivers, 3d mark 05 (6362). I'm running on AC for sure, I'll check the performance settings.

I didn't want to over clock, I thought the card was enough for my light gaming, but if there's a chance to improve the actual gameplay, I think I'll do.

I tried all the possible resolutions, from 640x480 low details to 1600x1200 high details, and they perform exactly the same way (except for the image quality of course)

Sounds like either a faulty card or a game incompatibility. I was getting similar problems like that in F.E.A.R. but that was cause I accidently had my Control Panel set to 16xAA for all applications. The only other time I had this problem was in Ford Racing 3 demo, cause that game doesn't like
Quadro cards for some reason.

If you just bought it, return it and order one with a 7900GTX 512, and then overclock the sh!t out of it...that 6300 3dmark score will jump to 9800, and you won't have any more stuttering problems this side of Oblivion @1920x1200...

I do think people have been able to get the GS overclocked pretty well, though, if you're stuck with that card...check out Joker's thread (do a search)...also, check in that thread to see what the average 3dmark05 scores ARE for the GS card, so you know how far behind you are with stock speeds...as someone mentioned, if your scores are REALLY a lot lower than average, there could be some other fundamental thing wrong (e.g. bad card, driver install order, etc. etc.)...I will say my old 7800GTX in the XPS2 I sold could hit ~7500 in 3dmark05 easily with some overclocking, so one would think the new GS model would at least get close with a couple o/c BIOS-flashes. Good luck and don't give up...for the config you paid for, that thing should be better than okay for 'light' gaming!
