HL2 + m1210 = very laggy?

Ok, so i got my new m1210 not long ago, deleted the bloatware and installed HL2. Steam finished updating it and i launched it. I got to the menu and it looked great. Two seconds later, the fan kicks in on high and the framerate drops to about 2 fps. What the heck is going on? thanks.

which video card did you get in your m1210? also, what video settings are you using in game?

i got the 7400 (sig)

i'd also updated the drivers from dell after it happened the first time. The behaviour persists though, even when i set everything to medim/low. im going to install doom3 and see if i have the same problem.

EDIT: i installed doom3 and still had the literal 2 fps.

I play at those same settings except also 2xAA and at 1360x768 on an external LCD.

I did a bunch of tests with the Couter Strike: Source "Stress Test" that might help see if you are getting normal FPS, if mine can be considered "normal"

Here is the original thread http://www.notebookforums.com/thread163748.html

And here is an exerpt of the important part:
"Do the "stress test" in CS:S and see what the average FPS is. I just did mine and it was 48.61. Not awesome but still very respectable and smooth to my eyes. I am not sure if the video settings effect the frame rate so I will try again at lowest settings just to see the entire range of FPS on my system.

With all options at low or off, I got a 139.71 average FPS. Do both tests and compare to see if there is a difference. At least this will confirm that the video performance alone is ok or is the main problem."

Running on battery by any chance?

nope, straight from the power source. powermizer isnt the problem.

K3nt, are you able to try the CS:S stress test? It would greatly help to see how it benchmarks since I beleive it uses the same engine as HL2.

(I got it for free when I bought HL2 so I was hoping that meant everyone had it or had access to it if they wanted it)

Time to give dell a call then and see what they can do. They might just have to send you a new system because the 7400 is integrated to the MB.

sounds like your doing something wrong

try reinstalling the dell video drivers for the 7400. i had to reinstall it a few times as i was cleaning out/ reformatting the laptop before i got it error free enough to run 3dmark05 and other games.

Probably a driver issue, runs great on my new m1210.

im having the same error. i reinstalled windows using the cd dell sent me. i used the driver cd to install everything as well. hl and cs 1.6 run great but my hl2 runs really slow, no matter what settings i use.

They'll probably tell you to purchase a real gaming laptop, not a tablet PC with a minimalist video card thrown in as an afterthought.

Wow, you're helpful. The M1210 is more than capable of playing Half Life 2.

I'd honestly just reformat and reinstall. The total CRAP that Dell loads on their systems = reformat immediately, always. I've never used a newly delivered Dell system for more than 2 minutes without reformatting.

try doing a windows update. i think mine was running better after i updated and restarted

I formatted my system and tried juggling the ram between slots and things like that but im still not having any results. I updated the drivers straight from dell and still had the problem. If i get drivers from elsewhere could it damage my hardware? Also, if they dont change anything, how easy is it to go ack to the dell drivers?

3rd pary drivers wont break your hardware - and it is very simple to roll back the drivers, just uninstall them, restart, then install the new ones and restart again. I use the X1400 version e1505 with 3rd party Omega drivers, but I'm not sure of what the good 3rd party nVidia drivers are.

My recommendation would be to NOT use the Dell drivers, they are not the most efficient. I'm not sure if you can use the latest nVidia official drivers on notebooks, I think there is a patched version you must install for Go drivers. Like I said, I use ATi, so nVidia is kind of a grey area, but 2FPS is not cool, you should be getting around 40 easily, I get 60 and the X1400 is not that much more powerful then the 7400.

And Yeoman, you sir, are a troll.
