Dell Inspirion 9400/E1705 Optimization

Thread Starter
Alright... I've been reading on these forums for a little over a week now and I've decided I should ask before doing anything damaging to my new laptop lol.

Configuration is: E1705\T2500(2GHz)\2GB DDR2-667\7800GO(???\????)\100GB SATA 7200\WUXGA+\SigmaTel Audio\Intel Pro WiFi+Bluetooth\DVD-Burner\90watt Power Supply\6Cell Battery

I am looking to tweak the laptop to the max for gaming, and am no stranger to overclocking and such but being this my first (and quite expensive) laptop I don't want to take any chances lol.

So what advice do you have for me?

#1: I've seen posts on how to overclock the 7800GTX and 7900GS/GTX... but how do I overclock my 7800GO? (and are there any set clocks that are stable?). Also what vid driver is recommended for the 7800GO?

#2: I'm going to buy a 9Cell battery for mobile life purposes... but does buying a 130Watt PS help me any? I know to use any higher vid card I need that along with a hacked BIOS... which brings me to my next question.

#3: Will installing a hacked XPS GEN2 BIOS (or something along that line) help me any? Will it perform any better than my stock BIOS with my system configuration?

#4: What is all this about over/undervolting and such? If it is applicable to me, what should I be doing/setting it on?

#5: What programs/drivers should I consider for my setup? I've seen that the SoundBlaster HD Audio may just be a codec (software not hardware) but that it isn't very good. Is it any better than the stock SigmaTel and if so how can I obtain it?

#6: Probably shoulda been the first question lol, but about reformatting. I am a firm believer in reformatting computers such as dell which come with all the unnessicary software/processes. BUT... how can I reformat if they didn't supply me an OS or driver CD's? (I didn't get to opt out for the CD's... so what can I do about reformatting without getting the bloatware?)

If someone can answer some of these for me and get me going in the right direction it is DEFINATLY apprecicated! lol. I'll be sitting here with this window open refreshing regularly in anticipaton .

#1 do a search and you will find directions on how to overclock the 7800 go
most of the time the latest drivers are the best also many like g force tonys drivers . Drivers are software and will not harm your computer some work better then others and some better on certin games and some not that good for gameplay but for runing benches. Most of the time you will finf the latest from nVidias site are fine but most dell drivers on their site are old and outdated look in the sticky for instaling drivers

#2
no when people purchase a higher power supply is because they upgraded their videocard meaning if they had a 9300 which comes with the 6800 go and want to put a 7800GTX videocard in it requires more power

#3 why would you want to instal a hacked bios ? Their is no need in your case

4# undervolting gives you more batery life overvolting make it possiable to clock higher but also causes more heat

5# The audigy is software and hardware. If you did not purchase it when you configuired your machine their is no need to instal the software that is spoke of

yes it is better then the sigma tel but as i said it is both hardware and software no need to instal the drivers and software if you do not have the hardware.

hope this helps

1. I've heard reports 90-series drivers have lower performance.
2. No
3. No
4. overvolting is a waste of power, undervolting will help you gain longer battery life + cooler computer but no performance increase. Read the stickies.
5. soundblaster HD should be superior to the sigmatel.

The SoundBlaster HD is NOT a hardware upgrade it is software only. It uses the existing Sigmatel hardware and adds some Soundblaster like options (EAX etc). I got the software on my E1705 after I ordered it and it worked fine. Just go to the XPS m1710 drivers/downloads page and download the Sound Blaster HD Invitation or some such and it can point you to the Soundblaster web site to buy the software for 20$ or such.
