Help buying a used dell 700m - issues to look for? daignostics? etc HELP

I am seriously considering buying a local used dell 700m, is there any program I can download to a disc and load onto this 700m to "test" it out and make sure everything is working?

I think my wifes 600m had a diagnostics type thing that ran a series of tests, I wondered if the 700m has the same thing and how to get to it, or if there is some other program out there on the net I can throw onto a disc and run to check this 700m out.

I will of course inspect it for scratches dings hinge smoothness etc seller says they havent even used it much is there anyway with a laptop to tell total hours unit has been on or anything?

Overall seems like a decent deal price wise vs ebay and such just never bought a used computer and don't know the seller personally yet they state it is in great shape 100% working fine has all restore discs and paperwork etc etc just they rarely use it so were selling it.

ANY help as to what things on the 700m to look for or in general any programs or things I can do to possibly insure I am not buying someone else's problem machine.

Also if there is any dell warranty left on this (he has paperwork still) can it be transfered to me as the new owner or only to original buyer?

Thanks,

Bill

havent got exact dates but when you buy one new they give ya what 1 yr standard? if the date is within 1 yr on his invoice i should be able to call and move into my name? If date is past whatever his warranty date could I call dell and get some sorta warranty added?

one program to check power on time is hdtune (www.hdtune.com). under the "health" tab, it tells you how many hours the hard drive has been on, which is basically how long the system has been on.

if it is still under warranty, i wouldn't worry too much about what shape it's in, unless there are cracks and crap is physically broken on it.

hours of use isn't really a good indicator. with hdtune, if they changed the hd, then it is worthless.

i'd find out if he did a clean install or not. if clean install, then you won't be able to burn the os off of the hidden partition or be able to do restore like it came when he bought it. if he did clean install, i would look for all the software: OS, cd burning, dvd playing.

you can only extend the warranty if the computer is still in warranty.

go to dell website and look for transfer warranty. it requires personal info like address etc, but not too personal. the seller or you can input the information, but it needs to match. then follow up with dell.
