Buyer's Remorse

Thread Starter
Just ordered a "low-end" XPS and as soon as I clicked the confirm button I was overtaken by buyer's remorse...

For $1k less I could get a well equipped 8600 w/ a 9600...and I'd be able to eat for the next two months.

...but then I do need to diet...

Ah, the agony of the notebook buyer. Desktop people can replace mobos, we're stuck with what we buy for the next 3-4 years (barring winning the lottery of course).

To cancel or not to cancel that is the question...

Lame post, I know...but had to vent somewhere

i cancelled my 8600 order 11 days after submitting. being that the order had yet to even enter the first step of production, it cancelled nicely and without problems. cancel it man, at least until they have more kindergarten quicksnaps from which to choose with the XPS...

You can get the XPS w/o the quicksnaps.

Just curious, does the quicksnap go over the standard blue dell cover or does it replace it?

The cover of the XPS isn't blue it is silver/grey. As to your question I have no idea.

I'm a VERY happy 8600 owner. My notebook is mega-fast and plays every game I've thrown at it at the highest settings...including games and files that wouldn't run or even open on the Area-51m I ended up returning. I considered returning my 8600 for the XPS, but after some thought decided against it. To me, the extra $$ just isn't worth the 10% - 15% performance increase offered by the XPS. If you look at my signature, my entire 8600 setup cost $300 less than the barebones XPS. I've also learned, thanks to the gurus on this forum, that the 8600's video card should be self-upgradeable to the M11, possibly even the M12 or Nvidia 5700. If you don't want to live on Ramen noodles and tap water for the rest of the year, cancel the XPS and buy a loaded 8600. If you don't like it, you've got that delightful 30 day return period during which you can stock up on essentials before re-ordering an XPS.

I am going through a little buyers remorse, and thats for a refurb! Honestly, if it were me, I would get a nice 8600 with the ATI 9600... but thats just me.

Thanks that is kinda strange, when I configured and bought my XPS the display views showed a standard blue back with the dell (and the wing looking things) and no XPS. Now it does show the silver/grey, that looks a little nicer too me, not the the looks would have made a difference in my choice. I assume the cover just pops on and off since the home purchase option does not give standard as an option, only the Small Business option. Hopefully that is the case is I did the Small Business purchase and just picked one for the heck of it, the standard casing looks the best too me.
Thanks again

If I were you I would wait and see what performance people are actually getting with the XPS before ordering, I dont think that an increase of 7 to 8 frames is worth a Grand, but thats just my thoughts....but if you are that worried then cancell and wait for reviews from real owners and then make an informed decision.........

SPECS 8600 1.7
128Nvidia 5650FxGo
768MB 333DDR
60Gig HD
15.4 WSXGA+(Samsung)
4XDVDR+RW
1300 Wireless

I second that

Not Questioning the amount because I'm sure it changes based on configuration, but before you cancel check the price. I checked based on the information on this forum. My configuration was only a difference of $453 (everything identical that could be). For me personally, it is worth $453 for the difference in the Graphics card and the memory alone. I'm not going to speak of the processor, because that remains to be seen. $1k would probably be a different story.

Well--I tossed around the same thoughts regarding the 8600 and XPS. I went with the XPS ultimately after deciding the 8600 wasn't for me(I want the power)--considered waiting for the 8790, but have had no luck w/ my 2 sagers previously. I am going to have the XPS for a while so I wanted the most future proof machine available--of course only one upgrade is guaranteed, but I'm willing to bet there will be more available in the future. The 8600 is a fine choice, but I can't wait to check out the m11--hopefully they will release it for 8600 users as well. Of course the XPS won't be here till around the 17th. Hopefully it will rip.

The fact is, the XPS is the "most" future-proof machine out there today (that I know of).

It will probably take the socket 478 Prescott chips, and will go as fast as they wind up going. Plus, it is more likely that the XPS will get an M12 than the 8600.

Other than those two items, I'd prefer the 8600 to the XPS myself. As it stands today, I will order the XPS or the 9100 some time in May-ish (I want to see how they do).

My trusty ol' Insp 8200 will last me until HL2. I finally hit the first game I couldn't handle to the max... Far Cry demo. I had to turn the water effects down to 'low'.

Well, I've pretty much decided to go for a low-end 8600 and buy again next year. But trying to buy from Dell is like being shrunk and run blindfold through a hamstertrail setup by an insane hamster-hating madman. I've already run through three different possible setups, none of which make any sense. They the hell does Dell charge Employee/Affiliate Tax but doesnt charge Home/Home Office tax? Why is it $19 for ground shipping for Small Business but $49 for everyone else? Why do they offer 1-day only coupons? Why? Why? WHY????

Frankly, I'm tempted to buy from someone else just out of sheer frustration!

Well. Dell won. Their low prices were too much for my cheap, cheap heart. Damn.
