I'm thinking of starting up a small-time laptop store, so far have contacted Clevo/Prostar, Compal/Chembook, and OQO for information. I am already an authorized Dell reseller, so I can get prices very much like Balth and BlueDevils and Techaholic get (don't worry, I won't step on your toes). I'm researching getting a couple more brands as well, like hopefully Acer and Asus, possibly even Arima or Uniwill. If there is more than one brand you'd be interested in, vote for the most likely, then post what other stuff you'd like.

I AM ALSO OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS! I'll probably go with Google Checkout, so there's no monthly fees, and I'll only be making a tiny profit per sale, so if anyone knows of a tool that would help me out, it will benefit everyone in the end, as a new place for getting cheap laptops will be available. I need a supplier for parts, like processors/ram/hd/and all that, so if anyone knows of someone other than MAlabs, let me know.

Many thanks.

i wouldnt get a specific brand, i would find which model or make i can buy for the cheapest and which ones i can sell the most for.

personally, i buy alot of stuff from china and ship/ sell it to the west (as i live there) and i have found im better not to think about the stuff, if i like it or not, cause i have found that if i dont like it, it is usually a great seller, i just cant understand it.

my two cents

ROFL! You're probably right. I find all kinds of really cool laptops that I'd love to supply the masses with, but would they actually like them? Donno. I'm hoping to have a fairly large variety. I've heard Clevo requires like 1000 units per month, but I'm hoping that's not the case.

So far, the poll is giving good info that I didn't really expect. Thanks, and bump.

Bump. I've decided against carrying Clevo as a main brand because I find their product quality to be sub-par. I might do it on a special-order-only basis though.

acer asus combo

There aren't enough Asus e-tailers. That's for my vote.

Dell will yield the highest profit for a reseller.

Dell. It's a no brainer. good reseller discount, they have a huge market, huge product catalog.. think of all the stuff you could get just for yourself and friends, let alone business

The general public in a business sense is geared towards the dollar savings. reselling any other brand is not going to be a good business decision based on compeition.

The company I use to work for is prime example. The more you spend with Dell the higher the savings.

Other name brand competition has a much smaller tigher niche. You stick a Asus, Voodoo, Alienware laptop in the mall and put there pric eon it and a Dell witht here price, the Dell is going to sell 100 to 1 over others. HP and Gateway are catching on quick seeing some of the local prices I have seen at Best Buy from these manufacturers.

are Dell reseller discounts really big? I ask because it looks like you have lots of resellers on ebay, but I thought many of them buy with coupons/% off deals than directly with reseller discounts.

I know a ethernet drop/phone guy who is a dell reseller. I think it's between 5% an 15% (10 is sticking in my mind but my memory is terrible) - I know it's more than enough to make it worth it. also, you can get even better deals by getting bundled stuff, such as boxes of operating systems and save ALOT in addition to that discount

It really depends on the item and how many you buy. For example, the M90s that people sell on here for $2500 (I could as well, but I'm gonna stay off their toes) retail on Dell's website for around $3600 after taxes/shipping. I tried getting a good deal on the 2407fpw monitor though, and the discount was only from like $770 down to $700... I also prowl the 'net for coupons and the like, but those only work in the Dell Home section. I got a Dell outlet coupon once, that rocked, but I haven't found one since then.

Anyway, I'm not really looking to set up shop here on the forums, I may advertise a bit, but I'd have an actual website/storefront kind of thing. Thanks for the input once again troops!

But the M90 in the outlet are really cheap.. I bought mine for $1180 after tax/shipping. (1.66/1GB/80GB/Combo/1500FX) I have seen the loaded version there for $1600-1700 shipped, but its rare.

Anyway I think that acers and asus are great, you get quality and price.. If I may ask though, how do you plan to do about warranty?

If I'm a reseller, I would assume even Acer and Asus would let the warranty go to the end-user, since they're non-transferable. Other than that, I probably couldn't do extended warranties unless the business takes off.

People have started buying all the outlet m90s and putting them on ebay at jacked up prices, which ticks me off. I want one for myself but when the PERFECT one came along, my credit card was maxed. There were like 23 there at the time (3-4 weeks ago) so I figured it'd be ok... There's been a max of 4 on there since, and usually are none on there. None even close to the perfect one I had found.

Not very smart or wise to ask in these forums, my honest opinion:

Most of us will say great name brands, that cost you a ton of money that NO one (ok well not no one, but a small share would buy from you) because 1) we know where youll get it from, and we could prolly get it for the same price, so us telling you what to get wouldnt benifit anyone 2) customers what cheap, long lasting computers, you wont find that in a 2,000 acer, asus, thinkpad, they want a 700-1k laptop, rarely do the "normies" go for anything higher, or with dell and use payment plans (thats another downfall for you OEM payment plays > you then again credit cards but meh)

my advice, sell dell, buy in bulk, and tell the customer that you can "custom make any laptop for their needs" and just switch parts around on the dells as you need be

but asking us, is like asking which is better, dell or ibm for laptops......we know more, the "normies" or public, doesnt.......youll waste money by asking us

but, good luck and hope it goes well for you! keep my pennies in mind
