Having been looking for a notebook that combines power with portability for quite a while, the best option seems to be Lenovo at this point. The Sony SZ series comes close, and I love the smaller size and form factor but a high resolution 14 inch display driven by a 256mb card doesn't seem to be available anywhere else.

Hey RIT, check out the T60 model 2007-76U. It doesn't have the 256 MB graphics card that you want, but everything else is top notch.

If you want the 256MB graphics card option, you'll have to go with a T60p, but I find the resolution 1600 X 1200 unacceptable for my needs.

Thanks, I appreciate you looking out for me. But I have a 2623-D8U coming this next week! Seems to meet what I need, and saves me time, money and weight from the Alienware I was looking at. I love my S360, but just need more power and screen space. The T60P that I ordered is the 1400 x 1050 14", so that should be great for me. Be nice if it was flexview (even nicer if it was X-Brite), but I'll deal. If I need the multimedia power I'll just have to plug in externals.

RIT - Congrats on your purchase. I know you'll love it. There is just nothing to be disappointed with... although the 15" LCD with IPS is a plus.

They would have been much better off making the Thinkpad more exclusive instead of trying to make it more appealing. Now all they can do is drop their price... which will only be a temporary bump.

how has apple done a better job? they prey on the avrage consumer which isnt a smart person its a "i must have whats better" mentality

'z0mg bob i got a mac cause it has no virus or spyware, TeEH TV TOLS ME SO!"
"and bob you wouldnt believe it, it WORKS OUT OF THE BOX, im never going with a pc again buddy!"

you want Lenovo to come bum rushing the market with "Well our thinkpads are bad ass, so these family based laptops should be too right?!"

I thought about that, but at that point I may as well just have gone with the Alienware M5550 with the 1920 x 1200 display. I wanted something powerful and portable, so the 14 fit the bill. Now I just need to get them to send me a Hebrew and English Keyboard and I'll be set.

for some reason... my ATI Radeon x1300 is 528MB.... is this right? seems kinda high for that

Bmann, it should be at 512 with the hypermemory. It borrows from the system RAM.

It's good to hear that they are "as good as they ever were"... because my experience with a T43p and customer service has totally sucked. And the T60 threads in "Thinkpad Forums" don't look so "problem free" either * I had a T43p MoBo Blow out --and spent 2 months of my time working with their phone support (who are excellent, btw) trying to repair it (and not doing *my* work with it.... I don't get paid to do laptop repair --I get paid for Using a laptop for CAD), (changed hard drives, DVD's.... weeks of dianostics, imaging the drive, restoring the drive FIVE TIMES --nada * I sent it back to "ELITE" IBM "SWAT" Team... * who PROMISED they'd fix it or give me a top of the line replacement * They SENT IT BACK TO ME BROKEN --TWO (2) new problems, right out of the box --which means they never even checked the damn thing before they shipped it. * The "customer statisfaction" rep AGAIN PROMISED ME A NEW TOP OF THE LINE MACHINE as a replacement * They are only offering me a 2007-94U as the replacement which at this point in time --I definitely don't see as "top of the line". * seven weeks after SWAT, and around 1/2 a year of no laptop --but monthly payments --I still have NO CLUE WHEN I'LL GET A WORKING COMPUTER.... BUT THEY WANT MY CREDIT CARD! YUP!!! Who cares when MY problem is solved --right? So the T43p was born flawed, their "experts" f*cked it up worse and didn't even catch the mistake before they sent it back to me, Their "customer satisfaction" rep promised me TWICE a top of the line T60P --which would be more like a 2007FU2.... and I'm not getting one.... I'm out the cash for the Port replicator and extra RAM for the T43p, (which worked for about two weeks) as well as more money out of my pocket to buy more RAM I need for the T60p and a dock for what I would consider the "Middle of the Line" T60P.... Nothing for the LOST VALUE, AND MONTHS AND MONTHS OF HAIR PULLING FRUSTRATION AND AGGRIVATION as reward for me chosing to spend my $3000 with them.... THEY GOT MY MONEY --I GOT A Useless BRICK.... They tried to fix it --and failed. They promised me "top of the line" replacement. They lied.. And it's dragged on and on and on --till the pebble in my shoe is now smashing a raw nerve with every breath Not even any vasaline or a "reach around" for all the headache, wasted time, lost revenue.... They won't even pull a machine and burn it in again, just to make sure I don't get a DOA, or other problem .... Nope, after all this, that's just too much to ask of them.... John Watson --Founder of IBM-- sold Hitler the business machines to keep track of the data involved in exterminating 13 MILLION people.... and I think that sets the corporate tone for "customer satisfaction" still. My personal suffering as a result of their manufacturing and customer support failure is meaningless compared to them maintain their profit. F*CK ME I Love Thinkpads, (despite mine never really working), (as well as having tec support in atlanta --those guys are great --no kidding) and so I'll just suck up the lost cash and time. I'll eat the frustration. I'll accept the middle of the line replacement they are offering (as opposed to the "top of the line" that "customer satisfaction" promised)... But after months and months and months of this dance.... I'm as far from a "happy IBM/Lenovo customer" as you can be right now.... And I won't forget.

Bear in mind that 3/30 rule. People who have a good experience with tell 3 people. Those who have a bad experience will tell 30 people. It's the same with Internet forums. You're going to hear more and more about the problems as people seek assistance. When things are going smoothly people aren't generally crowing about it.

I had a serious problem that wasted months of my time and energy --and they totally bungled it, [Edit: ] == removed a LOT of ME SCREAMING and RANTING --after seven months of being an understanding guy about the T43p's manufacturing and repair issues -- I hit a point last friday that was "the straw that broke the camels back" and I finally lost my temper and vented here.... stupid and not much help, eh? Anyway I should have a new T60p 200794U in a few weeks... I hope it works.... I'm kinda sad it doesn't look like the T43p.... I really liked the look and feel of that machine. 'Pologize for my behavior

Yeah, I get it - you had a bad experience. That's unfortunate and I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. My post was in reference to reading about only problems. Case in point.

[edited post:, boring bunch of me ranting and being ticked off cut out of it] Yup, the worst computer buying experience I've ever had --and I bought my first machine in 1986. With the arrival of the T43p, I promised to give my almost four year old Toshiba notebook to a social service agency for the disabled, for one of their clients --I'm so glad I hadn't shipped it, because it's what I've been working on this last seven months. Fun to run autocad on a four year old notebook.... But the sucker keeps chugging away.... Four years, no problems besides a replaced a fan about a year ago. What made this experience even more frustrating was that I **really** wanted a Thinkpad.... Before I bought it, I spent months reading forums like this, and looked at every workstation level notebook; Dell's M70, HP's nc series, and Clevo/Sagers.... Almost bought the HP machine for the ATI 5200 card (IBM didn't have that yet) and the better selection of ports (firewire, video, etc) but chose to get the Thinkpad because I love the look and feel, and their reputation for "reliability and customer service"... I definitely wanted a bullet proof computer to use making a living.... there isn't a video game on it.... So this really impacted work, money, etc. Sh*t happens I happened to get a lemon from the factory ... that happens to every manufacturer, no big deal... it's a fixable bummer, and definitely not "personal" to me.... no one said --lets give whomung the shitty machine and half a year of headaches ..... but I felt there was misrepresentation in the "I'll send you a top of the line replacement". ... I also felt there was a breakdown in communication, that had the result of leaving me feeling really unheard by "customer satisfaction"..... that was primarily a "timing" issue.... And I have no idea what was going on in the reps own life.... but the lag in response had the "mushroom" effect.... I felt I was being bullshitted and kept in the dark. And the thing had already dragged on and on.... and on...... and on and on..... UPDATE: EDIT The Customer Satisfaction Rep just emailed me.... he's giving me a 2007-94U, and tossing in an extra gig of RAM, and said he'd hook me up with discounts for replacing peripherals --like the dock I'll need to replace... This is a step in the right direction.... it's not "top of the line", but --if it works-- definitely a step up from the T43p... If they had just told me they were giving me THAT machine, instead of promising "top of the line" I probably would have just shrugged.... "sh*t happens" Oh well.... and argued for more RAM. Now lets see what a T60p is like. I was just told I should have it in about 10 days... I asked for the Restore and Recovery CD's as well, so I can boot from PC.Doc and stress it as hard as I can for a few days... --plus use "restore and recovery" feature right off the bat... if this sucker is going to fail in any way.... I want it to fail ASAP.... before I start to load it up.

My new T60 has just arrived! And it is excellent! contrary to what many thought quality is better than ever. I am happy with this machine. Here I post my first impressions:

1. Build quality. Lid material magnesium composite, and bottom cover manufactrured with CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) an space age material which presents optimun heath dissipation, light and resistent. But the best part is inside the cover: a one piece magnesium frame called Rollcage protects all the inside sensitive parts and contributes to make the unit a monolitic sturdy strutcture. Add to this a top notch keyboard with nice tactile feedback, no flex whatsoever, you feel the strog metallic plate underneath, it produces a little claquy noise indeed. As to display, mine came with a TMD (Toshiba Matsushita Display) one: excellent true life color, contrast and brightness, snow whites and deep blues. Good vertical vision angles, a little restrictive on its horizontal plane.

2. Design. This is a very subjective issue, and as you can read in this same forum, there has been a lot of fuss on this matters. Well compared with my late T42 I can say that this had details that contributed to its fine appearence, however... I don't dislike the present form. It is austere, you don't distract with colors, materials or shapes, you concentrate on your work wiith that feeling of security in your system that this starts to configure the real beauty of the machine... its function.

3. Performance. Smooth, it starts to work a second after you unpack it... easy and fast installation, and it comes with the necessary tools to work. No heath, no noise. And runs applications without whimminig.

4. Buying experience. A little difficult for the long delivery time and the lack of certain and clear information by the sales representative, at last the machine arrived, no further problems...

Well I am setting the system up, tuning it up, but let me say you I am very happy with it!!! The machine has me breathless and my colleagues saying WHOOOOOA!

I'm the guy right above this post, who was ranting about IBM/Lenovo customer service....

Well.... after 8 months of runaround from "customer satisfaction" I got my T60p 94u and I LOVE IT..... been using it for about 3 months..... not a hitch..... even taken it through bios upgrades, driver upgrades, etc.... (which I encourage.... updating the ATI driver solved a video problem, updating the bios helped the RAM, and the new fingerprint reader software is good.

For the first few weeks, I ran PC-Doc (from DOS) or Sysoft Sandra every night, all night, trying to burn the damn thing out.... PC-Doc kept finding a problem in the video, but updating the driver fixed that...

Now, it really feels tight..... it's all good.... knock on wood...
