New Cooling System

I'm going to school here in Florida so they always have the ac blasting in the dorm rooms. It is always too cold in the room so I thought I'd put that cold air to good use. Went to Home Depot and for $20 I had a much cooler laptop.
And I made a few air flow adjustments under the laptop out of paper and tape so it wouldn't get my mouse hand cold.

If you can't see the pictures let me know and I will host them somewhere.

Now --- can you make the whole thing portable????

well the aluminum flexible pipe can collapse into less than a foot long and then there's just that little metal end piece and duck tape, so I guess it could be portable.

Really neat man. Someone doesn't live in their parents' house. I can't pull that stunt off yet. By the way, what happens in the winter time? The heat will be on and then you will bake your laptop.

Absolutely cool!! Even better would be to fit a direct coupling to the fan intakes so no cool air goes awry. Then you could move around the room as well.

My kudos to you for an execellent solution.

Well in the dorms here they don't have heat, it's only and always ac coming out.
And I did think about the direct connect to the fans but I couldn't think of a good way to do it. I wouldn't be able to get a good seal and I don't really want to attach anything like metal or duck tape onto my laptop. The way it is setup now all the cold air is directed to the 3 fans and the rest comes out were the vents are so everything stays real cool.

For a connector, I'd figure to make something sort of wedge-shaped (kind of like what you have) out of cardboard but with the top open and with adhesive foam tape around the edges for the machine to settle into. You might want to put a filter over that duct as well, duct work is incredibly dirty. Why do you think that's where Legionaire's develops?

You could also work in the power supply and any other cables.

Yea I forgot to mention that I did put a filter over the vent before taping the duct on.

It does condensate near the vent and the tape comes undone every now and then, but I haven't had any problems near the computer as I can tell. And yes I probably should be studying.

In the winter, he can just leave it hooked up and the laptop can be used for central heating.

I've already used my 8890 as a supplemental space heater in my bedroom this winter. Worked well but was a bit louder than I was used to.

One morning that was particularly cold, the desktop was kept on too. That made things bearable (and I spend my nights in datacenters).

To take care of condensation, just use the little desicant packs that come with shoes and stuff.
