word perfect is not the same as microsoft word though it is similar, I like to use microsoft word b/c that is all I have used, you would need to by microsoft office to get word though I would suggest just letting your son by it through his University computer store most colleges offer these types of software very cheap.

or if you know anybody in the military, have them buy it. The Office 2003 military appreciation edition is only $57. It's the same thing as the student and teacher edition, except for the price tag

I'm a huge advocate for custom system building and Dell has been nothing but Hell for me. I hope to spare people the crap they put me and my friends through.

I have managed to put together a computer on www.newegg.com that has Video performance equivilant to that Dell and Processor performance that makes it cry. The total without the rebates comes to $3018.90. But there is also $100 worth of rebates on the thing, bringing the total down to $2919.90. There is room to bring the price down lower even if you wanted to. Heres the list...

I apologise if theres coding and typing errors in this whole post, its 4:50am here!

Coolmaster Case- $145 ($115 after rebate)

Asus Motherboard-$144.99

Two Asus branded Nvidia GeForce 7900GTX 512mb for SLI mode-$469.99 each, total: $939.89

Enermax Liberty 620 Watt powersupply-$159.99 (Including $10 INSTANT rebate)

AMD Athlon FX62 Processor-$839

Corsair XMS Memory 2GB-$182 ($152 after rebate)

Western Digital 320GB 7200RPM Hard drive-$104.99 ($94.99 after rebate)

Spectre Naga 20.1" Widescreen monitor at 1680x1050 resolution-#289.99 ($259.99 after rebate) Personal note: I own this monitor myself, it is beautiful!

Two Samsung DVD-RW drives-$34.99 each, $69.98 total (Including $15 INSTANT rebate for each.

Windows Media Center-$109.99

Thermaltake Venus CPU cooling fan-$32.99 (Personal Note: Not necessary but always good to have extra cooling. I have one of these and it works great!)

only thing on that list that I'd change would be the CPU. Can't see buying an FX-62 when an E6700 beats it down and an E6600 also exceeds it in quite a few benchmarks. Both are also at least several $ hundred cheaper, require less electricity and run cooler..
I've also owned a Sceptre 19" LCD for years and it's still kicking with no problems and looks great

SLI is a waste of money, that thermaltake heatsink is worse than the stock one, you only need 1 DVD burner.

While it would be nice to get a conroe, they are like $50-75 over retail price right now. If I were buying a processor, I would get the Athlon X2 5000+. It's only about $300 and is an FX-60 with half the cache. Plus as of right now, a solid OCing AMD motherboard costs quite a bit less than an Intel one.

Unfourtenetly Newegg doesnt carry the 5000 right now or any conroe chips. The FX62 beats out the Pentium D on that Dell by a long run. The main reason I put it there is I'm an AMD fan and its always my first choice in CPU's. But I'm know the new Conroes beat the 62. That doesnt mean the 62 is bad though, its still a very kick ass CPU. Heres the link to the Athlon 5000 to save a lot of cash:

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...mp&dcaid=17379

The only reason I put two DVD burners on that build is because the Dell had it and I was attempting to show that the Dell could be easily rivaled and beaten for less money. Taking out one of the DVD burners is one of the ways to save money. As well as finding the Athlon 5000 in place of the FX62.

Two DVD burners with a dual core CPU and a program that took advantage of two cores would be very nice for backup production

i think you should buy your son a newegg.com/dell.com giftcard and let him build the computer on his own. what you posted seems like way too much. seems like the seller is trying to rip you off big time.

since you say he is in his second year of college + he likes to game he should be able to build it for himself.

also if you do buy something get a conroe at least. he should check with his school. sometimes dell offers some discounts for epp.

TwilightVampire, your bring up a worthless comment, no sh*t its gunna be cheaper if you build it, its always cheaper....But I kinda like having factory warrenty's :0
post #30 of 30
That was uncalled for.

I know its cheeper and I'm sure most people here know its cheeper. Lynn seems a little umm...computer-ly challanged (No offence) and I wasnt sure if she knew. I am aware that you'd get a factory warranty and tech support if you buy through Dell (or whoever) but dells techsupport sucks.

If one chose to build their own system, each part is warranted individually through the manufacturer. Those warranties at least as good, sometimes better than a factory warranty through a large corperation.
