screen will not come on 9860

Folks - here's the system... happens intermittently either when coming out of standby or when powering up ... system is getting power, Blue power light is on, and led lights under the screen are on, HOWEVER...

1. no display on screen ... just blackness
2. no display in the CD "jukebox" area

To "cure" i have to hard boot down, power up ...sometimes MULTIPLE times and finally I will get my display and all seems well.

Any ideas as to what's going on? Sounds like I need to send this 9860 to Sager for repair. Their techs suggest "maybe" a memory RAM problem, but I don't see how that makes sense. To me, it's behaving like a loose connections somewhere or a power supply problem.

Has anyone had this problem before?

As excited as I was when I bought this computer, I am now equally dismayed

and disappointed.

I just talked to David at Sager as I'm having, yet once again, major

problems. Upon boot up and/or upon coming out of standby, the display will

not come up. It takes 5,6,7 sometimes up to a dozen attempts before the

computer will boot up (each failed attempt also has a symptom, the DJ clock

not coming on).

David states that 90% this is a failed motherboard. THIS IS MY SECOND DARN

MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am further drop kicked into ANGER by hearing that since I'm out of

warranty, my repair is LOW PRIORITY! Instead of getting fixed in 5 days, it

may take up to 10 days!!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS A MISSION BUSINESS CRITICAL MACHINE! This is going to cost me

MONEY!

Hi, I had exactly the same problem with my 9860 too I had to RMA to replace the motherboard , but on return after a week or two the problem arose again
so replaced the cpu but this did not cure the problem , so then I took the GPU out just re-inserted it and this it seems is the problem as the pc will boot with no problems , so I reckon this is the problem with your pc if you just push down hard on the back of your laptop directly onto the GPU (its the small fan by your pcmcia card slot ) the turn you laptop on I bet you a dollar it will work
I have cut down a heatsink from a 40mm fan i had and glued it ont the back of the GPU so its a tight fit when you replace the cover so as to keep preasure onto the GPU this has worked for now for months

hope this helps

My 9860 produced similar symptoms and required a MB replacement. However, it was almost 2 months before I recieved my 9860 back. Good luck on 10 days even.

FYI ss, I would think the increased tension provided by the extra plate would be enough to hold the plate in place without using glue. I would think a thin coating of thermal paste on the GPU and on top of the plate would be much better for thermal transfer effectiveness.

Thank you - I was able to unscrew the cover plate and unscrew the spring screws that the fan and heat sink is attached to, but HOW do you take out the GPU so as to reinsert?

as to Starclub's post ... 2 months?!? This is a mission critical machine for me and if it takes that long, forget it, I will be forced to just buy another laptop.

Hi Sorry for not making myself clear before, when i said re-insert the GPU i mean just pull the module out and re-insert it when you take the heatsink of you will see a brown strap going across the module just pull this and it will pull off,
When i said i glued the new heatsink of what i actually did was use a thermal sticky pad , you dont need to do this though, all you have to do is make sure your graphics card is seated correctly

Thank you SharpShot ... I did this ... didn't work for me. Oh well, I do appreciate your taking the time though to help. I've learned lots off this forum from people like you that care enough to take a minute and chip in. Thank you. Anyway, like i said, I tried this, pressed down pretty hard to reseat. Blank screen still on reboot ... powered down/up about 70 times ... really, about 70 times ... no joy. Let it alone for about 6 hours, went back to power up and it booted up first time... Haven't turned the machine off since. Still going to Sager tomorrow for a mob replacement or at least a diagnostic.

Hi gfotion .... its a shame that never worked for you as it did for me,
hopefully sager wont have your laptop too long. Did you ask sager about the posibility of upgrading your motherboad if they have to replace it anyway, this will give you an upgrade path then to the go7800 though you will need a new power brick too, anyway just a thought , hope it all goes well

waiting to hear... actually, they did tell me there are no more 6800go motherboards. they will have to put in the nvidia 7900 thus making the lappy, in effect, a sager 9890. Crud ... didn't think about the powerbrick. I will have to buy two. i hate lugging one around so i need one for the office and one for home .... cha ching cha ching cha ching $$$$$$$$$

Powernotebooks.com - champs!

Hey all ... got my 9860 back today. took it in monday, it's now thursday. GREAT TURN AROUND time and this is thanks to Donald, the owner of Powernotebooks.com who interceded for me w/ Sager. Since I was out of warranty, their policy is that warranty work gets done first and it could take 10 business days or more to get mine fixed. Well it took only 4 and I credit Donald with this.

I have a 9890 motherboard, but elected to keep my 6800Go GPU. Why? Well the 7900 card was another $500 or so and I'm saving up to get a new Merom lappy when they come out. You can bet I will get it through Powernotebooks.

Had to do a repair install of Windows. Not sure what Sager did to my OS, but it was hosed. No problem though, it was just a repair install so lost no data. The weird thing though is that I couldn't use my Acronis backups. I wonder if the bad MOB caused weirdness before I took the lappy in for service. Oh well, all seems well ... for now

I have the same problem with my 5720. I normally have to turn the dang thing on up to 20 times before I get a screen instead of the blackness. Well I tried the simple suggestion of pressing down down on the area above the video card and below it. The laptop restarted itself and boom I have a screen again. Thanks for the tip!

Happy to read the news. I know that TPC started this forum however, I really respect the folks at Powernotebooks.com. Heck, my 5680 was from Powernotebooks. I have a lot of respect for Donald.

I'm still thankful that notebookforums.com was willing to step-up and create a forum for all computer users to network. I have learned so much!

Screen Goes Blank on Bootup

I've got a variation of this problem.

When starting up, right after the self test, the screen goes blank right when it should be showing the XP banner. The drive spins a little, and that's it.

I can boot in safe mode, but can't seem to boot normally no matter what I do. I've tried flattening and reloading the system and the drivers a couple of times now.

It bugs me because I've got less than two weeks left on the warranty.

Actually, the one-year warranty has lapsed, but a Sager rep emailed me that Philips supports the nVidia on my 9880 (not a 9860 as originally posted).

As far as I can tell, the 6800 Ultra has somehow failed. The default XP drivers will work, but as soon as I load the nVidia, the fault occurs.

Serve me right for buying bleeding edge technology, I guess. I've got an old Thinkpad that is still soldiering on after having been dropped, etc.

Can someone tell me whether the nVidia 6800 Ultra is a user-replaceable item, or does the whole thing have to go off for a motherboard replacement or something? If that's the case, I'm going to use eBay to part what's left.

If it's still under warranty wouldn't it be worth it to at least get it fixed? The GPU would probably be one of the first parts to sell anyway.

The GPU is user replaceable if your motherboard is v 6.1 or higher, which I believe is the case for the 9880. Otherwise you will need to buy a replacement motherboard and power supply as well; they are included in Sager's upgrade kit. Sager support should be able to tell you for sure wether or not your machine is user upgradeable.

About ten days ago, my 9880 had the exact same problems. It happened immediately before the one year warranty expired, and since I delayed calling it in, found out the warranty expired a couple of days prior. Fortunately, I bought the extended warranty, and just today, finally sent it off to MicroMedics. Wish me luck.

Anyway, after a few times of it booting into safe mode, or into VGA mode, it would no longer even POST. No HD activity is apparent, and there is a sick, struggling noise from the DVD-writer. I personally think that the problem is more severe than simply the GPU card being on the fritz, and suspect a mainboard issue.

Best of luck with yours.

Addendum: I've tried loading the drivers in a different order, and avoided loading the nVidia drivers, but the same problem occurs, so it doesn't seem to matter. I've got an RMA from Sager, but since it's out of warranty, I've got to decide whether I'll try to replace the video module myself in hopes that it will fix the problem, but if it's the motherboard, well, then I'm twice screwed.

Markharju, I'm having the exact same problem. Please let me know what your outcome was!
It sucks, as I just got my video card replaced less than 2 weeks ago - 6800 ultra (it fried playing F.E.A.R), and after reinstalling Windows with laptopvideo2go's 91.31 drivers, this happened, the screen goes blank. I started it up in Safe Mode, uninstalled the drivers, tried installing the drivers on sager's website, 84.22 and the same thing. The screen goes blank when installing them.
My warranty just ran out with my previous GPU, now I'm having issues again.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!
