How to burn-in brand new laptop?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I just purchased a Toshiba satellite P105-S9312. It will get here in about 1 week or so. I was reading some posts about how laptops get super hot at the beginning of use and how to get it ready for personal use, but could not find any good "guide" for this.

For this reason, I ask if anyone could make a list of things to do once you get your new laptop. I have heard about this "burn-in period" where you have to put it to the max? How can I do this? Can I just use a demanding game (Oblivion)? How long do I have to run it for? etc...

Also, what is the best way to get rid of all the shit programs it comes with? I don't think the laptop will come with a XP cd, so I can't really use that to reinstall everything. Can I just remove the programs (uninstall) and defragment the comp? What good programs are there to control temperature, performance, etc.?

And finally, how can I adjust the PC to my likings? What kind of stuff do I have to do to make it go as fast and smoothly as I want? I do not want to overclock the graphics card or whatever, that will void the guarantee and it is too much trouble.

Thank you so much for your help (if any replies).

I am really excited since this is my first laptop! And my first personal computer!! I want it to run as best as it possibly can!!

Best regards,

Lionel

PS: I found this software online (http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm) for burn-in, is it good? Has anyone used it before?

its pretty easy. just leave it on for 24-48 hours doing nothing. go to poweroptions and make sure it doesnt turn off the screen or harddrive or standby during those times. the last time i heard the actual need for burning was when pentinum 3 came out

The only time a "burn in" is neccasary is after you install new thermal compound(usually AS5) on your CPU or GPU. You are supposed to cycle the system between periods of hot and cold. What this does is it allows the thermal compound to melt and resolidify several times. This causes the compound to even itself out and seek areas that are hot but do not have any compound applied to them. This is why if you apply AS5 (and follow the directions) you will notice that after the first few times the system is on, the temps will drop. This is due to the thermal compound "reconfiguring" itself for optimal thermal conduction.

That being said, Most OEMs use a thermal pad (a solid material essentially "glued" to the processor to enable heat transfer) which doesn't require a burn in.

That's what I've done. Follow the deleting with a registry cleaner or two and you should be golden. I use CrapCleaner and RegCleaner.
