XP system error

A friend has a V2 premeir system that she bought last year and this same problem has happened twice. The first time a tech came out and replaced something. Either the entire system or some hardware. The customer service is pretty bad with this company. Here is the problem...she starts up and the screen is "tye-dye" colored for a few minutes. Then the bios version...etc..etc..etc. Just before windows would normally load this error appears...windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM...is this a hardware or software problem? I thought it was the video or memory at first...she does not have the recovery cd's but she is going to demand them. Could I load my copy of XP home to do a repair install? Thanks.

It could be a corrupted registry. The last resort is to do a format and reinstall. The problem with using your copy of XP is that you will be prompted to enter the key code at some point and if it has been registered already then it will not allow you to intall that copy. If it is still under warranty, I'll call the company again and demand that they fix the problem and make sure that it is fixed properly.
