I own the Acer Aspire 1642..and after alot of trouble conecting it i figured out this: you will see on the bottom of the notebook there is an orange rectangle that is light up..and that is what enables your wirless connection..But everytime you close the screen it doesn't light up and the internet connection becomes disabled..Does anyone know how to turn this feature off? Thanks!

Tried looking in Acer Power management? You can set wireless lan 'ON' for battery and mains power. This will (should) enable wireless whenever you power on, after shutting down (is this what you mean by 'close the screen?)

no i meant like if i leave a program running and then try to shut the screen...

Ah, you mean 'minimize the window' probably. And so this causes loss of an internet connection?

yah so like if i leave AIM running or something and then I put the screen down it will disconnect my internet for some reason...

May be a problem with AIM using a wireless connection. Does it disconnect and then re-connect, or stay disconnected. Or try Google for AIM support.
here's one http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/ai...onnection.html
maybe its the same as your problem..

have been looking for answers, it seems you are not the only one looking for a solution, millions of AIM users have the same problems.

and I'm not even looking to keep my AIM running all day just as long as I can use it for a while without my internet disconecting..Also, I would like to fix my problem when I put my screen down, Ya know?

And you tried repairing the connection, and still this happens? If you haven't, right click on your wireless icon in the taskbar bottom right and select 'Repair'.
I'm guessing here you've already tried this. second thing is to unplug and re-plug your router unit, or re-set it, whatever.

Ok dave, I will try unplugging my router thingy and let you know what happens..Yeah i've tried doing repair, its good for about 10 minutes or less..P.s. Thanks so much for all your help!!

Is there a 'time out' period that you can change, to increase it, within AIM? something in the menu? And if not this is a quote from another forum:
'Setting TCP timeout and UDP timeout in your router to 600 seconds, and apparently this cures the fault....just gotta figure out how to do it now!

yeah if you could learn and then teach me how to do that it would be cool!
OK Graceanne, you need to tell me the make and model of your modem/router.
This isn't going to be easy...for instance have you forwarded ports on your router for AIM talk?

hold on I have to find out and when I do i'll let you know
I am thinking about switching about DSL would that help it? Or would I still need Wireless LAN?But isnt DSL really really slow?
My Acer goes on "standby" by default when the lid is closed.
If this is what yours is doing,go to power management and select"do nothing" when the lid is closed.

Pretty obvious,though,so i doubt if that's it.

And no,DSL is really,really fast.

Dialup is really slow.

Yeah I have already done that..I put it on "no action"
BUt this problem is fixed all you have to do is make sure you have a good conection and it won't disconnect you..
