Caring for your new arrival and notebook build quality issues!

OK I am getting my Aurora M7700 sometime soon and after reading the couple of reviews on driver heaven and some other comments on forums regarding active maintenance and caring for your AW notebook I decided to pose this question...

- What quality checks of my own do I need to perform when I receive my new notebook?

- What maintenance do I have to perform regularly, cleaning etc?

- What bios checks or system config in XP do I look for?

- Benchmarking? do I need to? can you spot if something’s wrong this way?

- Any tips / tips on usage?

Under control panel, open "system" (in classic mode) and make sure your Turion reports the right clock speed along with the correct amount of RAM. Under power options, set the power scheme to "Always On" to optimize gaming performance. For benchmarks, go to futuremark.com and get 3DMark05 or 06 and run that and let us know the score. This will make sure SLI and everything is working correctly.

I keep a thin sheet of packing material between the lid and they keyboard when I shut the lid. Some of the rubber stoppers on the lid were too far in when I got my 7700 and created chafe marks on the lower bit below the keyboard.

the packing material has stopped it getting worse

You may want to perform some additional tests to ensure everything is as it should be:

1. Find an accessible location at least 30 feet from the ground. Holding the notebook by the front-left corner, drop it and inspect the damage. If only the external plastic casing is scattered across the ground, don't worry - it passed the durability test!

2. Bring a 20 gal. vat of oil to a nice consistent boil. Gently lower the notebook (while powered on) into the oil, carefully noting the power LED. If the system dies in less than 7 seconds, I would send it back for replacement - otherwise it passed the intense heat/liquid test!

3. Place the notebook into a 4 inch deep tray of chilled water. Place in your freezer and let it sit for at least 12 hours. Find a location at least 50 feet above the ground. Release the block of ice containing the notebook and observe the results. Again if only the exterior is damaged, it has passed the extreme temperature and water resiliancy tests!

4. For the final test, you'll need to rent a steam roller from your nearest heavy construction equipment supplier. The minimum weight requirement for this test is at least 4.5 tons (9,000 lbs). Place the notebook on a firm surface free of rocks and debris (a clean-sweeped patch of parking lot should do the trick). Run the front roller across the notebook forward, backward, and then forward and complete by passing the rear roller over it as well. Once complete, the notebook should be a minimum of 0.5" thick (regardless of the model). If it is not, Alienware has included parts not consistent with the product description and I would return it for a replacement. Otherwise, it has passed the weight-compression test!

Provided all tests are applied and passed, you will be guaranteed that the notebook you ordered was up to specifications.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage to personal property or any resulting psychological disorders (such as post-traumatic stress disorder) as a result of performing these tests. Please take all necessary safety precautions before performing any of these tests as all have tremendous potential for personal injury or death.
