ok deep breaths!!!

ok we have 2 options.. so the question is: do you need any rmoe data thats on the laptop?

the easiest thing to do would be re-fromat the drive, re-install the operating system.

procedure: get a boot disk(www.bootdisks.com) use fdsik to delete/format/patition the drives...

boot up, type fdisk, follow the prompts... kidna easy.

next just go into the bios and in the boot priority set it to boot from the cd rom.... pop in your windows cd and just run through the set up.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

If you need the data things gt tricky... id start in safe mode and one by one load each driver to try and isolate what may be causeing the problem...

try booting form the last known good configuration.

when exactly does it shut down? do you get ot your desktop? does it tell you it shutting down or does it just power off?

could be a bad power supply battery... mroe liekly a driver or software conflict...

like i said try loading thigns one at a tiem to isolate it, then we can work on correcting it...

sorry if this is kinda vague but tis tough to troubleshoot without mroe details/loking at it.

What OS do you have installed? If you have windows 2000 or XP, check the "Event Logs" in safe mode to see if you have any errors. Windows 2000 and XP also has a repair option on your installation CD. If you have win 98 or ME, try and reinstall the OS over the old one. Try these options first... You could still retrieve your data that way.

Good luck!

Just a side note, it helps to be more descriptive in your title than just "HELP" maybe more like "Notebook dies mysteriously after booting". That will help get the people that can help involved. Just "HELP" doesn't say much.

Beyond that, do you have any antivirals? If the machine was working okay before, then unless you changed a driver or installed something, its more likely something nasty got in and is screwing you up. Also, what OS?

As jamaster said, if you don't need anything more on the drives, just reformat and reinstall though it wouldn't be a bad idea to do as much detective work as you can. You may have copied off the problem in uploading your data. Just putting it back on could then end up a waste of time. Download AdAware and anything else you can to check for problems. If you have antivirals, do a full on scan.

When you find the problem or are certain you have taken care of it, reformat and reinstall. Then carefully scan all your uploaded data for any problems. This will likely take a half day to a day, depending on how quickly you move, how confident you are and how well you know the process. I'd suggest reading the instructions for doing the reinstall at least two or three times first if you are familiar with them.

And be sure to check back here as you can. I am sure there are other comments that may help.
