Bluetooth and dv8210us

I just got a Bluetooth phone and was told my laptop might connect to it.

How can I tell if my laptop is Bluetooth ready? I don't see any options to enable it. If not, is it possible to still buy something to connect via Bluetooth, other than buying the Cingular data cable? I seem to have to buy one with every new phone.

HP Pavillion dv8210us.

Thanks for the info. I'm still wondering if my dv8210us is bluetooth ready *without* purchasing the USB Bluetooth adapter.

Assuming I need to buy the adapter, which one should I buy? Not as in brand, as in Bluetooth standards. I see Bluetooth 1.2 and 2.0 adapters. My phone, a RAZR V3, says it is Bluetooth Class 1. I'm assuming there is backward compatibility and the prices for the 1.2 and the 2.0 are about the same.

i got mine of ebay - search in item description "usb bluetooth blue soleil" then u have a bunch to choose from. it supports 1.2. and 2.0 by the way the software that comes with the device is more than good enough to support everything. upgrade will cost you antoher $6-$10, i opted out. cheers ...

As qhn stated, you do not have bluetooth in your notebook.

As for Bluetooth standards, you will find that it does not really matter if all you are connect is a RAZR. However, it is usually best to go with the higher standard, since compatability is implied. Personally, I bought a Zonet 1.2 adapter when I got my RAZR and it worked just fine. Although it is sitting unused in it's box since I bought my bluetooth enabled notebook afterwards.

In any case, you will find that any bluetooth adapter will work fine with the RAZR, for connectivity. The real question is what do you expect to do once you connect. I found that most functions (accessing phone book, copying pictures) is not really available unless you have their s/w. I think it is called Motorola Phone Tools (MPT), and I bought mine off Ebay some time back. Try over at HowardForums for helping on mucking with the RAZR.

Also note that Bluetooth Class and Version (or Standard) are very different. Class 1,2,3 is how far the devices needs to be from one another for there to be enough signal to communicate. 1 is a few feet, 2 is maybe 10 feet, and 3 is something like 100 feet. I may be off about a factor of 2 or 3 here, but you get the idea. The bluetooth version (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 2.0) will determine its maximum transer rate. The later versions employ frequency hopping or some other technical mumbojumbo (again, if I remember right) to improve throughput. For talking to your phone, I don't think it would matter, but realize even BT 2.0 is very slow compared to a network wifi or ethernet connection. Having said that, I would try to find a value 2.0 dongle (I got one for about $25 I think) just to future-proof yourself as best as you can.
