Turion 64 ML34 Memory Queston

Thread Starter
My Gateway MX6441 notebook came with a 512mb stick of DDR 333 (PC 2700).

My question is, will DDR 400 (PC 3200) run at 400 mhz in my notebook if I take out the stick of DDR 333? I know from experience that combining DDR 333 and DDR 400 in the same machine will cause both modules to run at the slower speed, so I will be running the DDR 400 by itself.

I have heard conflicting stories on this, and would like to find out before I waste my money on expensive RAM my notebook can't take full advantage of.

Thanks in advance for any useful info!

very good read, regardless of laptop models

cheers ...

That laptop has both the memory slot accessible under the laptop so it would be more efficient replacing both memory sticks with DDR400.

qhn:

So if I am understanding the linked thread correctly, PC 3200 will work, provided that it is 2.5 volts? And also, I can only use one memory slot. Correct so far? And all this applies to an A64 based machine?

Any brand recomendations, as in something really cheap and generic that still does the job?

One other question. Did anyone get their PC 3200 to run at CAS 2.5? Or does it all run at CAS 3?

not entirely true, in my machine, it was an issue that i must have 2.5v - new machines can now be "relaxed" and allow usage of 2.6v module. taking the safe bet, if urs comes originally with a pc2700 module, then do look for 2.5v module when u plan to upgrade

u can use both slots, sorry, i do not quite follow u on this one

no - it applies to all machines, it just happens that here in this forum, we r more into info sharing/learning

ram prices are almost identical at the moment, i do recommend that u stay with name brand modules (crucial, Kingston, ...)

it will be hard to find a cas2.5PC3200 at the moment. http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/07/...d_up_your_ram/ makes a good read on ram tweak cheers ...

OK, I ordered the following from NewEgg:

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Notebook Memory - Retail. CAS 2.5, 2.6 Volts.

I will let you all know how it works out.

My Turion 64 ML 34 notebook will handle 400mhz memory at PC 3200 speeds. Memtest shows my memory bandwith has increased from 999 mb per second (when using PC 2700 RAM) to 1250 mb per second (using PC3200 RAM).

I guess I'm happy, but I see no obvious improvements in 3D games or Photoshop performance.

However, the cooling fan runs almost continuously using the 400mhz memory. It appears that the machine runs noticably hotter with 400mhz PC 3200 RAM.

So I put the 512 mb stick of PC 2700 back in alongside the 1 gb stick of PC 3200. Now I'm back at 333 mhz with 1.5 gb of RAM. I may go back to 1 gb @ 400mhz sometime in the future, when the weather cools down.

OK, update. I installed the AMD processor driver, and the fans come on MUCH less frequently.

Before, if I did anything at all (like opening the Control Panel, or any other window) the fan would come on immediately, no exceptions.

Now it only comes on if I look at large file size pictures or run a game.

Addtionally, 3D game performance is MUCH better with the AMD 64 processor driver. I can't really account for that. Maybe since that processor has an onboard memory controller, it is managing the memory better.
