When it comes to networking i am a total newb. While this is still the summer and i have free time i wanna set up a network.

Layout is like so(mspaint ftw!):

What I wanna do is be able to share files...and most importantly the printer. How do I get started.... If it isn't obvious the desktop will be @ the center of everything

how much experience have you had with linux?? and not just ubuntu based versions. as they are a lil too user friendly. and to clarify when u say the desktop will be the center, you wanna use it as a file server??

SAMBA!

Funnily enough, this is similar to what I am doing, albiet much less complex.

At any rate on your desktop you would want to run the SAMBA server, and on the clients(Laptops) you would want to run the samba client software. Some distros implement this by default into their installation, of which I believe Ubuntu is one, and the SAMBA software implements the Windows Networking protocols on linux so your Windows machines should think your desktop is just another windows machine to share directories and printers with.

Heh Ill answer this one for him... ABF is known as our Distro Guinea Pig, he has tried out every distro I can name and a few I can't. I doubt that he would have any problem understanding and setting up Samba, he may not be experienced in networking, but on the desktop he knows his way around pretty decently.

PS ABF....

INKSCAPE FTW. Screw MSPaint, requires MS or Wine

PS Obviously post up with some specific questions as always, it is beyond my abilities to type out a full writeup on how to set up Samba, on no sleep and no liquor. But there is plenty of stuff out there for you to read about, and I dont tihnk youll have much problem setting it up, start with the basics and them move up.

On your desktop, try setting up swat to configure and share your printer. Edit /etc/services to include the following:
swat 901/tcp

(If 901 is already taken by some other service, find an unused port number.)

Then in a web browser, type:
http://localhost:901

(or whatever port number you assigned.) This brings up the samba web admin tool. Just configure your printer for sharing, then use the printer setup tools on your laptop to print to that printer.
