What is best antivirus (cheap or free - NO TROLLING)

Thread Starter
just curious. I am a long time norton user and I am looking for something that takes less of a system hit while installed. Free/low cost is better...

I dont need any of the "automatic" background services that most packages install as I am very disciplined and have only got 1 virus since I have had a 'puter (10+yrs). I just need a scanner that can scan new downloaded files and maybe a system scan now and then.

thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I suggest AVG Anti-virus. It uses very low system resources, excellent virus protection, and it's FREE!

I would have to recommend avast. i've been running it for over 4 years now, best feeling I had was when it found 2 trojans that norton missed. granted that was a few years ago but i find they've got a quality product. it's free too.

I have and still use AVG and Avast on my systems.

Generally, I use Avast on my personal systems, and use AVG on other people's systems. I would use AVG on everything, but since Avast has an x64 version, and AVG Free doesn't....I'm simply using Avast on everything for simplicity sake.

I also love avast. Best antivirus program i've used. It doesn't use alot of system resources either, so you gotta love that.

I was using AVG and it seemed to work well, but sometimes it took a while to connect to the updates. I use McAfee now, because it’s free if you have Comcast. You may want to check with your IP to see if they offer any free services.

I got Norton Corporate 2001 from a friend and have been using it for the longest time. It has minimal system usage and doesn't have as much crap attached with it as the newer versions of Norton do. However, I haven't tried the other programs listed above, so I don't know how they pair up. I'll give those others a try soon.

I don't know if any of these programs work without running in the background. Hopefully the automatic background running services can be turned off, so you can scan a file now and again.

AVG and Windows Defender are a great duo.

From personal experience, I avoid Norton and McAfee like the plague (if these hogs could fly, they'd crash and burn)

Avira AntiVir PE is another free German based program. It works fine for me.

Anoter vote for Avira AntiVir. The options for background scan (such as: scan only when writing, not when reading) are really useful for me. Same goes for options used when manually scanning files. Also, it has caught more stuff on two of my desktops than AVG. So, I can heartily recommend Avira as a free antivirus program.

Kaspersky Antivirus 6 rules all!

To the OP.... I'd grab a copy of ALL the programs mentioned above... run them all.

Check w/ your work

My workplace requires that any home users have AV installed and they decided to purchase the licenses for us. We use a volume license for Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition Version 10.x and of all the AV's (with Adware scanning to boot), this is the best of all the products i've used. I know the Norton Antivirus edition is a resource hog to older single threaded CPU's, and the Corporate Edition is almost the exact opposite.

Check in with your IT staff to see if they have anything like this. The corp editions are usually stripped of those "all in one" things like NAV has turned into.

Good luck.

Panda Antivirus for me. It caught A LOT of stuff that both AVG and norton didnt. Go to their website and it can do a virus scan and let you know. It doesnt plant crap on your computer, and has been rated verywell. It also had low system use. I promise if any of you were to try this you would agree
