I hope you changed the password on the DSL modem.
Now, as for port forwarding: Your DSL modem will be completely visible to the outside world (obviously). As far as I know, it does not include any router-type capabilities.

esp. in the FAQs. In the options, make sure you pick the option "Block Ping from WAN side". That will definitely make it harder for people to break in. Make sure you go through the whole product manual (available at the web site above) and read through the descriptions of all the options. If you have a question about something, post it here.
