Replacing a T40 screen...can I do it myself?

Thread Starter
I recently purchased a replacement screen (LCD, bezel, outer plastic cover, etc.) for my Thinkpad T40 because my screen currently has a large crack in it. However, the nearest computer store is going to charge me $95 an hour to install it (saying it will take at least 2 hours to do also). So I was wandering if anyone could give me a link, directions, whatever, so that I could do this myself. Or, if you think, let me know if I should just pony up the money to the repair guy. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Here is a more specific set of instructions for you: T40 Hardware Maintenance Manual

I am curious how the above poster made out?

My dog dragged my t40 off a desk and around the apartment thus rendering the LCD barely usable (I have, however used it for the last 16 months). I finally bought a replacement on ebay and now I am nervous about performing the operation. I just printed out the lcdsforless instructions and I hope they work.. Any words of wisdom for me, other than to back up everything I own?

Hi all,

I recently bought a Thinkpad X60 - 1709 model.. may be 6 months back. Sadly, a week back I accidently broke the lcd. I can see a big crack in the underlying LCD under the screen. I cannot see anything on the screen now, even though it still lights up. I used an external monitor to check if everything else works and thankfully it does.

Also, unluckily, I didn't take any insurance plan when buying the laptop. I am sure its still under warranty, but not sure if thats of any help in this case.

Of course I don't want to throw the laptop like this. It would be really cool if I can myself replace the broken LCD (I think I can, if proper manual is accessible). Can anyone here offer some advice on how to go about it? Should I call up the thinkpad people and tell them about it? Will they offer replacement.. for some cost? I also found a google sponsored website called thinkpadservice.com which claims that they can replace any 12" lcd for $395. But I am not sure if I can trust these people. Anyone has any idea about them?

Screentek is selling the lcd for $435 (the part number matches with part numbers on the thinkpad site). Is that the only option?

Thanks alot!

Be careful with the cables and notice any screw you remove so you will now exactly where it was. 3 weeks ago me and e friend replaced the lcd of a t23. With all the studying and manual reading and rereading took as max 2 hours!

Good luck!

My T40 LCD replacement went well.. or at least I am writing this on it. My advice is
1) be very careful with the screws. They are easy to loose especially when you are replacing them, they drop. I actually may have lost one somewhere inside the computer.

2) Be careful when removing the plastic from the old LCD. It is quasi glued onto the old LCD and it you must peel it off. I cracked the plastic (pretty much unnoticeable).

3) Pay attention to the bracket at the top that holds it closed. Also pay attention to the wires that I believe are for the wireless antenna.

Good luck!
