7900 GS single/dual pipe?

So whats the deal between the single/dual pipe I keep hearing about?

Is this referring to the heat pipes for cooling?
The internal pipes in the GPU?
Can a single pipe card be modded to a dual pipe card?
What ones come in what laptops?
Performance differences?

I have searched around a bit but not found the info I am looking for.

Thanks.

- Yes
- No
- No
- Single in E1705/9400, Dual in M1710
- Dual allows for "slightly" better OCing.

So, assuming cooling is of negligible impact to the overclocking, are the chip's core speeds any different? Is there anything really worthwhile difference to the GPU itself?

A slightly different question, my E1705 has a single pipe 7800GT that OCs about 100mhz on the core, and 250mhz on the RAM. While I'm not convinced it's worth shelling out the money for, if I were to upgrade to a 7900, should the single/dual pipe make that much a differece in my decision? i.e., is the added cost for the dual pipe card worth it?

Thanks -- great answers

One more question -- if I were to buy a dual pipe card from an M1710 would it fit in the E1705 I have (the heatsink on the left side -- for cpu -- seems to have some extra space there which would let the other heatsink from the gpu fit in there...) or is there more to this than just that?

As far as manual labor goes, it's the same mod as shown here:

Two little pieces you have to bend/break/dremel out for the second pipe to fit. Otherwise, it will drop in.

I upgraded to that card. The only thing besides taking the notebook apart is you have to break out metal tabs that are above the CPU fan. You will see that once you have it apart. I busted them out in pieces with a pair of pliers. Other than that, it fits fine. I got mine from Bal'thzar in the for sale section here.

Same exact chip and IMHO the dual-pipe is not needed. Some data in this thread backs up my opinion. -> http://www.notebookforums.com/thread157393.html

Yeah, I got a 7900GS Dual piper..its freakin bad ass!! I used to have a Go 7800 that would run 86C with FEAR set to max. The 7900GS runs at 70C with the same FEAR settings!!! BAD ASSS. You do have to break off some tabs on the case on the left side...this is SO easy to do. If, you cant do this simple as mod you are a RETARD!! lol j/k, no but it is really really simple. Stock temps for the my 7900GS dual pipe are 375/507. I have no idea if these are the same for single pipe 7900GS although, I dont see why they would not be. I have not have to overclock yet since I really dont need to!! FEAR runs bad asss.
