Disassembly of Dell 700m screen & removal of broken speakers for cable repair

Thread Starter
I found that my speakers had stopped working and I was kinda cranky - so I got a little crazy with the screw drivers and pulled open my lovely (apart from the noise on the audio input *sigh*) Dell 700m. I added the step of removing the keyboard as you may want to repair the speaker cable or remove/change another of the screen connectors.

You will need:

1x Phillips head screwdriver, preferably non magnetic and insulated (just incase),
1x 4mm wide tool like a straight screwdriver (Dell says 'plastic'),
1x small craft/xacto style knife,
1 x Soldering Iron (low wattage 15-20W),
Some x Solder (a small size, sub 1mm is better),
4 x Short length of wire (20-30mm) - something flexible and thin,
50mm or more of 1-2mm heatstrink tubing,
Some x knowledge of how to solder and lots of patience.

The Hinge & Hinge Cover

Step 1: REMOVE THE BATTERY AND CHARGER!!! - Remove the Hinge Cover as per the Dell website's instructions.

Step 2: Remove the keyboard screws (2x), push the keyboard gently toward the screen, lift and raise out - !!!NOTE!!! it is connected by a ribbon cable top the mainboard don't yank it, just take it easy. You won't need to disconnect the keyboard but you can if you really want to. More about removing the keyboard on the Dell site.

The Screen

Step 3: Remove all of the little round grey bump-stop style things (Not the long ones along the middle!) around the edge of the screen - put them somewhere safe, as you WILL pick them up on the edge of your shirt cuffs etc. They are sticky little buggers.

Step 4: Remove the little grey panel next to the wifi light - use the edge of that sharp knife and gently life it up.

Step 5: Undo the 7 screws you have exposed, put the screws somewhere safe - again they will go walkies if not herded up.

Step 6: This the tricky bit - gently lift the bottom corner (one at a time) and push the edges along the side in, you should be able to gently work off the tabs along the sides and bottom. The top is another matter - you can get the outside ones but the inside ones need a new tactic.

Step 7: To remove the last clip on the bezel around the screen you will have to do 2 things (simultaneously no less) - pull the catch all the way back, and slide it (looking straight on) to the right. It will move so far and then should pop off easily - you need to keep pulling the catch all the way back to get it off.

Step 8: Lift off the bezel - hey presto.

The Speakers

Step 9: Undo the 2 screws on each speaker and put them apart from the others. Undo the screw next to the high voltage ! symbol. Lift off the speakers and carefully route the cable out from underneath the little PCB.

Step 10: Unconnect the plug under the keyboard and carefully pluck the cable out from under the little tabs.

Step 11: Trim back the speaker cables 1 or 2mm, make sure you don't trim the shorter one back too far (noting which is right and which is left). Seperate and remove the insulation with the sharp knife. Tin the ends (there should be 4) with solder.

Step 12: Trim back and tin the ends of your 4 short cables, and solder the ends on ONE side (important as you need to put the heatshrink over the joints!).

Step 13: Place a short length 3-5mm of heat shrink over each of the solder joints, and shrink them (I sit in front of a gas heater for 5mins).

Step 14: Slip heatshink over the cables (but don't shink it yet) and solder up the remaining 4 joints. Slide the heatshrink over the joints and shrink it. Test the joints at the plug end with a multimeter if you have one - you should get near 4 ohms resistance. If you get shorts undo and start from Step 11 doing only what you need to.

Reassembly and Testing

Step 15: Refit the speakers and cable paying attention to how it sits near the hinge. Refit the 4 screws for the speakers and the one screw for the little pcb (on the right side).

Step 16: Refit the keyboard if you removed it and the battery. You'll want to test it before complete reassembly so use use something long thin and plastic to push the power button.

Step 17: Boot up and run Winamp, Mediaplayer or whatever makes noise in both channels, testing the output for BOTH speakers. Once you know it's okay shutdown and remove the battery. If it's not okay start from Step 11 again doing only what you need to.

Step 18: Reassemble (it's the reverse of disassembly, seriously :P) - taking it one step at a time. You may have issues with the hinge cover - be pre-pared to wiggle cables.

That's it

You're done - get a beer, G&T or glass of wine (taking care not to spill it into the laptop) and go on with whatever it was that you were doing before the laptop died and annoyed the out of you.

Hopefully it lasts more than 5 mins - just be carefull with closing the lid eh?

be sure when attempting the Dell 700m speaker repair above, that you have properly grounded soldering iron and work station. If you do not ...you are playing Russian Roulette with your laptops electronic components. They are very sensitive. The job can be done but is from average to above average for its complexity and skill level.
If you have questions about how to proceed with the Dell Insprion 700m no audio or broken speaker wire problem. Just email me and ask> blueddiamondd@harbornet.com
Thanks and best regards
