Wait for Merom or just buy now?

I am purchasing a laptop for college next year. I have a harddrive and memory, just need the rest (planning on getting a z96j). However, it feels stupid to buy a Yonah based laptop when Merom is just around the corner (late august/early september maybe?). I was planning on having it built before college, but now I'm thinking that I should just wait for Merom to be released.

My options right now are to:
a) buy a 2ghz yonah and upgrade to merom when its cheaper
b) buy a cheap yonah (1.66 or 1.83) and upgrade to merom earlier
c) wait for merom

any suggestions? I'm leaning towards waiting. It feels dumb to pay 300+ for a processor that will cost much less in a month and when there will be a superior product available for nearly the same price..

There's always something new around the corner but if you can wait it might be worthwhile at this point. I just ordered a W3J knowing the Meron's are coming but given the lack of 64 bit software available I figure I'll run with the 32 bit chip for a couple of years and then upgrade. Its not like the dual 2 GHz chips are lacking in power

But even if I did decide to just get Yonah's, won't they be much cheaper once Merom is available? Nobody's going to pay $320 or whatever for a T2500 when the Core 2 Duos are out...

Just buy NOW, and upgrade to Core 2 Duo (Merom) in a year or so when prices go down. Thats what I'll be doing. All current Yonah machines will be able to upgrade to the Merom processor.

Wait. Although 'somthing new' is always around to corner, you are waiting one piece of hardware, right before the release of a newer model. IMHO, it would be really foolish to buy a processor right now.

You've made all the good points already. You can either wiat and get a merom, or wait till merom is out, and pay a good deal less for the current 'top of the line' procs.

Etiher way, it's really up to you, but I think that your initial instinct of waiting is correct.

Why not buy a Z96j with a Core 2 Duo (Merom) now? The 2.16 GHz Merom only costs $40 more than the Yonah 2.16 GHz:

I suspect that the cheaper 2.0 Merom will be a available soon.

LOL, in Limited Quantities, thats alot of cash (20.00 difference from Yonah 2.16) for having 64bit and a 20% boost in performance(which many average users dont see)

Right now you will have plenty of power with either of the Yonah series of Core Duo's. Wait until a couple of years to purchase a Merom chip once prices subside and you can make the upgrade easily without any hassle.

Why not buy it with a Celeron-M 410/420/430 now (because they're really cheap and they still use the Yonah core, so they work in Core Duo mainboards) and then upgrade to Merom later? It'll cost a little bit more than just waiting for Merom to arrive, but you get the laptop sooner.
