5400 vs. 7200

I am interested in purchasing an S96j but am having trouble deciding between a 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm HDD. Could anyone tell me if there is a major difference in heat production between the two and if the faster HDD will make a large difference in performance for things like gaming and programming.

the performance increase you will see in gameing will be faster load times...probably nill on the programming side...as for heat couldn't tell you, I've got a 5400

7200rpm not always faster than 5400rpm HDs, it depends on the capacity, for example, a 120GB 5400rpm will run faster than 60GB 7200rpm since 120GB has higher density on the disk.

Density plays a certain part, but in general 7200rpm is noticably faster in my experiences. I have a 7200 in my W3J and a 5400rpm in my Z62F while using the 7200rpm drive eveyrthing is snappier, and feels more like my desktop did, went from a desktop to my W3J, and hard drive speed was important to me becasue I had a Raid 0 array on my desktop. Anyways imo go for the 7200rpm if you want the quickest hard drive performance, becasue it pretty much is the bottleneck in any computer

Thank you for the information on the differences in performance between the two HDD speeds. However, I am still worried about the increased heat that may come from the 7200 rpm. Does anyone who has a 7200 rpm HDD in the S96j have any heat problems and would be able to record the laptops heat; especially in the base and palmrest.

I don't have a laptop yet, but don't the 7200rpm HD's use more battery?
On my W3J There is a bit of heat from under the notebook where the hard drive is. The palm rest is barely warm so heatwise the 7200's arn't that much warmer. Battery wise I think there is only around a 10-15 minute loss with having a 7200rpm hard drive,

if you plan to capture video, 72k is better than 54k.

For overall the suggestions, 7200rpm can give us a better performance than 5400rpm. We can make a test in a same Windows, same applications and same hard drives capacity or density, but different speed of them. Probably, we can see the difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm.
Cheers

I would guess that a 7200RPM drive would definitely generate more heat, common sense says that, since it's spinning faster. But, there are plenty of laptop users that are funning 7200RPM drives just fine in laptops.

You will notice a speed increase in certain tasks, mainly things will be quicker, but if you're doing Audio/Video work or the like, there's no question - 7200.

If you value battery life and efficiency, go for the 5400. I have a W3J with a 100GB 5400, and it certainly satisfies me. I run Guild Wars and WoW, both at max settings with no problems at all, BF2 at mid-high with no problems (could run higher, but you need more fps in that game).

In the end, it really just depends on what you want to do with your laptop.

Well, for gaming and the such you can even use a 4200rpm drive, as long as you have lots of ram and all.

but seriously the amount of heat, from my experience, is not that differente between the 7.2k drive and 5.4k drive but the performance is. Right now im using a 7.2k drive and ever since then, i am used to do things fast. every time i use a slower notebook i notice even if just for a little. its just nice to have a fast machine, eh?

you will be please with any of the drives you get, if you have never used 5.4k or 7.2k both will be great. in my case, i would go for the 7.2k because everything just feels and is faster.

so basically, 7.2k is faster and overall better than a 5.4k drive, except it might get a few mins less on your battery, and produce a little more heat which as i said in my case it wasnt noticeable, mainly because my computer is hot no matter what you do

I have a Hitachi 100gb 7200rpm HD in my s96j, the heat is fine at the palmrest, a little warm, but it does get hot underneath the laptop although I have used the laptop on my lap for 2-3 hours wearing thin shorts and it wasn't that bad. IMHO, I would go for the 7200, sometimes I wish it was faster and if i had a 5400 I would probably bite my nails off waiting around for crap to load.
