Dell will launch a wide-range of AMD notebooks in the fourth quarter, targeting all market segments from low end to high end and offering models that use AMD Sempron and Athlon 64 processors, as well as Turion 64 x2 CPUs, according to sources at Taiwan-based notebook makers.

The first AMD-based models, which will likely be launched in late October or early November, will be 15.4-inch notebooks manufactured by Quanta Computer for the consumer notebook market, the sources said. Then, Dell will introduce 17-inch AMD-based models at the end of the year, the sources added.

The anticipated launch of AMD-based notebooks means that the cooperation between Dell and AMD will cover all the segments in the PC market. In May, Dell already introduced its AMD-based servers, and the company is expected to launch AMD-based desktop PCs in September, the sources indicated.

How are the AMD mobile CPUs?
As far as I know, they can't compete with Intel Core Duo, but I may be wrong.
I would never buy an Intel desktop computer, though!

l'm not too hot about the newest generation of turions x2, but l doubt core duo would pawn them in regular gaming, and apps. All l've seen is pure benchmarking test and that doesn't reflect real world usage at all. Saving a few seconds in decoding may not be worth the extra $300 you spent, or that extra fews frames in WOW.

i personally love my turion 64

Core Duo vs Turion 64 X2 is competitive. Different people will say different things. However, unlike the T64 X2, the Core 2 Duo is a pretty big upgrade and will definitely pwn the T64 X2. There are articles all over Tom's Hardware and Anandtech, among others, if you are interested in the technical details.

EDIT: Also, unlike the T64->T64X2 upgrade, the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo are pin-for-pin compatible, making the upgrade process a lot easier.

you can't make that comparison because they are 2 different types of upgrade. going from T to TX2 is similar to going Core Solo to Core Duo. Going from Core Duo to Core 2 Duo is switching to the next GENERATION....AMD's next gen isn't ready yet...

Well, unfortunately for AMD, I made (and currently make) my comparisons based on what is available. I'm unwilling to cut AMD slack simply because they couldn't keep up. They've kept the lead for a LONG time with their products. However, I believe that Intel just took it back (at least in the mobile market). I remember something similar happening (in reverse) to Intel when AMD introduced the Athlon XP/64 lines, with Intel being unable to catch up for months and months. At that time, I said that AMD is the sure bet for a good system. That is no longer true. If AMD wants my endorsement, they should release their next-gen sooner.

Also, 4x4 (AMD's answer to the Core 2 Duo), is a poor excuse for a stop-gap measure and will not really help them in the long run. They just need to catch up in terms of miniaturization technology, power-saving technology, and so on. Unfortunately, simply being cheaper only takes you so far.

NOTE: for reference, here are my personal recommendations (assuming no restrictions on the part of the buyer):
Desktop: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (Socket AM2)
Notebook: Intel Core 2 Duo

I double doggy dare you to prove that with any links to reputable benchmarking websites. I've yet to see anything which suggests Merom is a "giant upgrade" over yonah.

everywhere you see 10-20% some people may consider that a giant upgrade. but to most its just a boost

Well, considering I didn't say "giant upgrade", I'm not sure what you are looking at.

As aintz pointed out, the general consensus is that there is a 10-20% boost, depending on what the user is doing. I consider that to be a pretty big upgrade. While I can't find any benchmarks at the moment, I have seen quite a few done by users at this forum (using Merom samples they were able to get their hands on). That is enough proof for me that Merom will pretty much dominate the mobile market for the time being.
