Serious Serial Problem

Hi Guys,

I have just purchased an Area51 LT and have some issues.

I will tackle these one at a time.

#1

I am having a VERY difficult time getting a USB to serial port adapter to work.

I get it installed.

Check the COM port to verify it is all good.

I configure the device to use the correct port parameters.

Then as soon as i plug a device into the port it freezes up and dies on me.

I use a number of serial devices and they are imperative to my professional existance. I bought this guy second hand so I dont have access to Alienware support.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks,

Mook

Whos is the vendor on the converter? I have a Belkin USB/Serial adapter so I can manage switches and routers out of the box, and it works great!

You should check the port settings on the modem, then make sure you are n ot on the same IO and IRQ. By default mine is on COM3, however its not using the traditional settings of 3F8 Irq 4.

The other possible conflict is the IR port, mine is set to Comm 2 (2f8 irq 3) So for my USB/Serial adapter I just disable the IR port to keep it simple while I am working.

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunatley it didnt do the trick.
I had the IR disabled already. Tried changing the port and such but i couldnt get it goin.

I am using a belkin device as well.

Model F5U409

I tried disabling a number of devices to no avail.
If this does'nt work, i may have to return this bad boy.

It would be a shame being that it has taken me 3 days to get it configured the way i like.

Best regards,

Mook

Still No Good!!

Hi,

I am still no good with this USB to db25 adapter. Anyone having trouble with this?

It installs to COM5 and when i configure any application/ device to use it locks up and I have to reboot.

I have tried disabling my IR port as suggested and have not yet resovled this issue. I would really appreciate some assistance.

Best regards,

mook
