New Laptop Advice

Hi all, great site!

Been looking around to buy my first laptop for starting my final year at uni (only really word processing and net browsing), as well as some music use (Ableton Live, Final Scratch, Storing Mp3's etc). Dont play any games whatsoever so Graphics card is not important at all, though i do understand integrated Graphics can affect the overall speed of a laptop. And i should say now that a Firewire port is a must (for final scratch) which i think has ruled out most of the acer range, unless someone can show me different, which is unfortunate becasue they seem to have great spec for the cost.

My budget for the laptop is quite low (i'm a poor student), somewhere in the region of £500-£699 (at a stretch) which works out at approx $1000-$1399 i think. For that i require 1024mb RAM, at least 80gig hard drive though 100gig would be nice, cdrw (pretty standard now) and Firewire port. As for processor this is where i am not sure. The new core duo machines are slightly out of my price budget though if it was going to be a necessity i could maybe save for a little longer, that said i see none of them are 64bit compatible. Would i be best saving for the core duo or as i wont really be playing games or doing any photoshop or design work would the sempron 64bit be better for me in the long run? With vista on the horizon.

Here is one ive been looking at..

Any advice or suggestions on any other better alternatives would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Michael

Anybody any ideas?

Do you have a preference on screen size or on which country the company is located in?

No pref on screen size, 15" inch would do.

Living in the Uk so that would be preferrable though not overly important really if its a good deal

I bounced over to discountlaptops.com and configured a 15.4" dual core Sager 6630 for you. It does not have a dedicated video card, which will save a you alot of money, and since it is a Sager it is still badass.

Sager NP6630 - V
15.4" WXGA Glare-Type (Glossy) Display
Pentium DUO 1.83GHz Processor (Yonah / 2 MB L2 Cache / 667 FSB)
Intel GMA 950 Shared Video Graphics
1024 MB DDR2 (667 MHz) Memory (1024 MB x 1)
100 GB Hard Drive (5400 RPM) SATA
8X DVD±R/RW / 4X+Dual Layer / 5X DVD-RAM / CD-RW Multi Drive (Pioneer DVR-k16)
Internal 56k Modem (V.90 & V.92)
Internal RJ-45 10/100/1000 Ethernet/LAN Card
Internal PCI Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN
6-cell Smart Lithium Ion Battery
4-in-1 Flash Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MSPro)
Built-in 1.3MP Digital Video Camera
Ac Adapter w/ power cord included
Free Carry Case
No Operating System Installed, drivers included on CD-ROM
1-year parts / 1-year labor warranty from Sager
Lifetime toll-free technical support by calling 800-741-2219 (or 626-964-4849)

The total price as config'd was $1224 which is about £652.32. That includes about £21.3 for shipping, though it will cost you more for overseas.
It does have Firewire, so you have that going for you as well.
Full spec's are HERE.
This is just to give you an idea. You can of course config something else, somewhere else, but just be aware that you can easily get what you want WITH dual core and still stay in your budget.

I would go with the Asus A6KM for £694 (inc. VAT) :
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ASUS_.../version-1.asp
AMD Turion 64 MT32 Processor 1.8GHz
1024MB DDR SDRAM
100GB Hard Drive
DVD Dual Layer Drive
15.4" XGA Widescreen TFT Screen
Nvidia Geforce Go 7300 256MB
Integrated LAN and 56k v.90 data fax modem
Integrated wireless 802.11g - Call for advice on Wireless networking
Integrated Digital Camera
4 USB 2.0 Sockets
4-pin Firewire (IEEE 1394) Port
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Pre Loaded
Weight from 2.85kg
2 year warranty

For a little more £703 you could get the Asus A6TC which has the dual core Turion:

The ASUS A6JC is a good choice as well (£602):

Been thinking about this acer as well..

http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/Acer_.../version-1.asp

Have heard the intel core duo is a bit better than the turion dual core. Still not sure about whether i would be foolish not getting 64bit though. Decisions decisions!!

Do you guys reckon 64bit software is gonna be just around the corner? I''m no expert at all just know vista is sure to be out sooner than later and dont want to leave myself needing another new laptop when everything goes 64bit.. if it does shortly

This one i suppose might solve alll the problems?

IMO 64bit is not really of concern at this time.
Even when Vista comes out it will take Microsoft at least a year or two to work all of the bugs out. Afterwards companies will have to re-create their programs to really take advantage of the 64bit architecture.

Also keep in mind that you are on a budget. The 64bit notebooks that come out will be wicked expensive for a while.
