So here's the deal, according to this review http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=2766&p=1 the E1705 and M1710 are vertually the same computer if you add some options to the E1705. The review makes it look like the M1710 is a better machine in the end but the E1705 they tested had 1G of ram while the M1710 had 2G. The E1705 was also tested with the 256MB 7800 while the M1710 had the 512MB 7900 GTX. The only thing you can't get on the E1705 is the 512MB 7900 GTX but is that really worth 1,500 more then the 256MB 7900GS which is what I spec'd on my E1705. Here is a compare of the video cards tested and spec'd.

Tested 7800 vs 7900 GTX:

Spec'd 7900 GS vs 7900 GTX:

So basically they are all the same other then video cards, which, will all be obsolete in 6-12 months when Vista rolls out. Correct? Anyone see any reason to spend 700-1500 dollars more? I bet in a month after the release of the Core 2 Duo for notebooks and with Dell's ficsal year rebates the E1705 will drop another 400-500 bucks....what ya think?

They will not be obsolete in 12 months, unless you need absolutely the top top performance...

The E1705 seems overpriced, you can use coupons to lower the price... also, upgrading ram and hd by yourself through a cheaper place like newegg.com will save you a couple hundred bucks (on all 3 systems).

The M1710 can be had for much cheaper with the sellers here in the forum, like techaholic and bal'thazar, check out the FS section. (they get the systems straight from dell, accept credit card, very reliable guys)
balt's thread: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread164575.html

That aviator is the Sager 5760 if im not mistaken, wich can be had cheaper here:

My personal opinion: Get the E1705 with the lowest processor possible to upgrade to merom and save your money to upgrade it next year.

If you don't care about the money and you want top performance now,
I would go for a M1710 from balt or tech

They will not be obsolete. They just won't run DirectX 10 in hardware. However, all those GPUs are powerful enough to run Vista+Aero without any real problems. I don't know about a price drop on the e1705.

Also, you can drop a Merom in the e1705 and xps1710 (for sure). Probably true for the Aviator also. So, don't worry too much about the Core 2 Duo's release.

For gaming (which is what I assume your goal is), I would go with the GPU with the highest amount of RAM. That will make a big difference in future games, and should be a major factor for you. Other than that, if you expect to keep the computers for a few years, make sure you check out the warranties. Personally, I love the CompleteCare warranty from Dell. I believe that gives them an edge over most other manufacturers.

Good luck with your decision.

zakaluka2.
