My 10 cents

I have had Norton on since I bought my 9200.

Have updated with the latest Norton Internet Security 2006 earlier this year. I was getting to the point where it was taking 5 to 6 seconds to open Word or Excel. Today I deleted the lot and downloaded AVG Free. Now it takes about a second to open programs that took ages just yesterday.

Anyway had seen posts before about how much some of these programs slow down laptops. Its true, my ten cents.

I think it is because Norton is a resource hog. I know as I'm a Norton user.
I understand though on why Norton is using too much resources. It has more tasks and more services than the other antivirus. I like AVG, Avast! NOD32, AntiVir and Norton but I sticked with Norton because it is what I personally need and like. I simply configure it to not scan the:
- emails
- IM
- office application
- removable drive

As long as the auto-protect is on, any malicious file that will try to execute should be caught. Also as long as it is configured to scan all files instead of certain files only.

The only other problem I have with Norton 2006 with the obvious resource issues is that many people have reported to me that after removing it and installing other competitor products that they found more virus, and spy/mal ware right after tossing norton out. And wonder why if Norton is doing its job why would there be things still present. I tend to agree, it is odd, and I just do not trust it anymore like I did in the past.

The fact is that you have to use multiple apps to do the job, and Norton just tries to do so much at one time, that it sometimes does more harm than good crippling your system when it is running. This has been true for Norton system works for many years now, everyone I know who has made use of that software have also had far worse performing PCs.

I stick with McAfee for viruses cause it does the same if not better job, downloads do not cost you anything for the updates, and I use spybot, csshredder etc for the rest of my needs.

I also have a 9200, and I had McAfee on there for over a year. I didn't realize how much it had slowed down the computer either. But then, I think something was wrong and it would start scanning while I was playing games even though it was set in the preferences not to do so.

But after reformatting and using AVG instead of McAfee I've noticed a world of difference. But it's about time for me to reformat again seeing as how it's taking a while to startup now.

Definately use AVG over Norton/McAfee. Your system runs like garbage with Norton and you'd be better off having a few viruses than using it. Norton makes a killing by selling their product to "non-technical end-users" (in their own words) if you read back in the SEC on their meetings.

AVG is super low on resources and actually finds more than Norton does

I definatly agree I have helped some friends with slow computers and 90 % of the time they have norton and when I uninstal and clean everything up and get rid of unessary junk and instal adware and spyware protection that really works it is like a new machine. I have to disagree with the MacAfee statment tho I use just the virus protection and it is knowhere near as bad as norton when it comes to useing resourses and it does work unlike norton

Just my 2 cents all my machines run great with it.

Well McAfee isn't as bad as Norton, but it is still awful when you compare it to AVG considering the latter will catch more problems and still uses 1/4 of the resources.

Just updated AVG, then ran it and found I had worms, two of them. Norton didnt get them.
Now no worms.

All antivirus programs slow things down a bit...it's the nature of the beast. You are adding a layer that everything has to pass through before executing. The problem is, some slow things down more than others.
