Links and webpages coming up slowly

I'm on a wireless-B network and my desktop has lightning fast internet, but my new XPS m1210 seems to lag on some links. I hit the link and nothing happens for up to 30 seconds. I found that if this happens I hit the link again until the page pops up, and then it pops up at normal speed.

I'm assuming its a browser issue

I'm using

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6

All other computers have no problems, but pages "hang" on this laptop, after multiple clicks they speed through fine. There is no movement of the blue status bar either.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried re-installing the browser, or at least check if it happens in another browser to see if the problem can be replicated? Those would be my first steps...

It's doing it on IE as well.

is the M1210 the only one on wireless? If yes ensure you getting good signal strength thru wireless also if your using a router to share your connection ensure your getting full speed and priority on your router for wireless devices. A painless thing you could also try is just updating your wirelesscard drivers at the dell webpage.

I plugged in my linksys USB wireless G adapter and it corrects the problem. I reinstalled the intel 3945 ABG drivers and tried to use intel instead of windows to mange the wireless.

Do I have a messed up wireless card?

I wanted to update and bump this

I am still having problems with the connection, links come up very slow or I have to click them multiple times to see some blue in the progress bar

my other PC is lightning fast

I have the newest intel drivers and software

I don't really have a case to get dell to replace the card because its so subjective and hard to prove

How can I get them to replace the card?

I've reinstalled everything I can think of, and tweaked my router, but other PCS are fine, so I think its the card

by saying a USB adapter is faster?

any advice?

You most definetly have a case with dell regarding your card. You just need to explian that a 3rd party hardware produces better results than the Intel wireless card you have in your notebook. You may even suggest dell replace your "better" Intel card for a "lesser" Dell branded Truemobile card.

So now I'm experiencing this on my desktop that is wireless.

Is it more likely to be my router or the cable modem?

I can't really afford a new router right now.

whats your router brand and model?

Linksys BEFW11S4

and I have firmware from 2003, guess I should upgrade it
post #11 of 21
Yeah, definitely the router. I had a BEFW11S4 that started doing the same thing to me. Had to reboot it almost daily. Now I have a WRT54G v4 that's been up over 60 days straight without a reboot. Would be more had lightning not knocked out my power.

I upgraded the firmware it its even worse now.

I keep having to rebbot and renew the dhcp.

I guess I will have to scrape some cash together to go for the G.

I just bought a WRT54G off newegg. $15 mail in rebate right now.

I'll see if that fixes it.

Ensure you get an older WRT54G V5+ are less reliable than V4 and below.

I can't find the versions on any sites I was on, aside from when ebay users mentioned it. I guess I'll have to risk it.

chances are its a v6 router which is everywhere. If you want to make sure you get a v4 router buy a WRT54GL which is basically the WRG54G v4 but 15 dollars more =/

I cancelled the order, I don't want any more problems. I read some reviews that reiterated what you said.

Could be a DNS issue... might need to clear the cache.
Under network properties, double click on your adapter, click on the support tab and click on the repair button.

I upgraded the firmware and started to use WPA and it started yellow triangle !'ing me.

I am weary of ebay sometimes. What is another good router to use?

I am loyal to linksys though.

like Dell Machina said

The WRT54GL is basically a v4 WRT54G that sells for $15 extra. The L at the end of the model denotes that it's running Linux. And I don't blame you for being wary of eBay there's no guarantee you're buying a WRT54G that's been bricked by a faulty firmware flash. Whatever you do though do NOT get a Buffalo air station from Best Buy, friend of mine bought one. It wouldn't work right, so he exchanged it for another. Then took the 2nd one back. The Air station runs similar Hardware and Linux like the WRT54G v4.....but we just never could get it to work right.
