Modem problem

I just tried setting up a connection using Hyperterminal and I am running into a problem with the modem on my new 51m. After I click on "Dial" the staus screen pops up telling me that it is dialing and then after about 20 seconds I get a message saying "No Answer". Funny thing is that I did not hear the modem actually dialing - no dial tone or connection tones either. So after fiddling around I re-installed the modem drivers. Once again I try connecting but this time I actually hear the dial tone, dialing, and connection tones come thru the speakers - but right at the point where the connection should be made, the phone disconnects and I get the "No Answer" message again.

I use this connection dialy on my old Compaq laptop without any problems. Same dial in number, same exact settings. I checked under the Device Manager and there are no problems with the modem there. I also tried changing the various settings for the modem under the Control Panel (disabling the v.92, etc) but no go. If I unplug the phone line and try dialing I get the message "No Dialtone" so it is recognizing that.

I am at a loss. Anyone else have any modem problems? Like I said if I try this number with my Compaq it connects fine. Just can't get the 51m to connect. Any help or suggestions would be great, thanks!!

Try a comma before the number
try a comma after the number
Sounds like some kind of timing issue.

Try some init strings - i am a bit rusty with modem connections

Try to see if Dial Up Networking will connect to an ISP

Yes, I was just thinking the same thing - to try and connect to another dial-up number such as AOL or whatever. I will give that a shot tonight.

The weird thing is that I can physically hear the dial tone, dialing process, and the remote computer pick up and send the modem tones but there is no modem tones being generated on my end in response. It's like the 51m modem can't "hear" the other modem even though it can detect the dial tone.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well I configured dial-up networking to dial into my ISP and it worked like a charm. Still can't get Hyperterminal to connect to my work though. Mmmmmm.... guess I'll just have to tell the boss that I can't work from home anymore. hehehe. Actually, it's gotta be a setting somewhere in Hyperterminal that is causing a problem.

Dial up etworking connecting verifies that the modem is able to go through the handshake properly. It is a setting issue, but now the question is where?

Did you try the comma before or after the number?

I believe init strings can be used with hyperterminal without making a "global" change.
