Alienware

Hello. I am looking at purchasing a notebook. I do not plan on using it for gaming. Mostly looking for a compliment to my desktop and portability.

I love the look of alienware and have come awfully close to buying either the Sentia 3450 or the M550 (really want the bigger screen).

What has kept me from proceeding is there is not a lot of good word of mouth out there on Alienware. Except for this site most of what I have read is real bad. pretty brutal to be honest (especially when talking about customer service).

Here the reviews are better...still get the feeling the customer service is not the greatest, but doesn't sound all that bad.

My questions are. Is the negativity warranted regarding alienware? What are important components to a laptop. I am not into gaming....mostly will be used for internet and accessing spreadsheets and movies, music while I am on the go. Do I need to step up to a bigger processor or should I stick around the 1.86 range? Also the RAM. Currently my desktop has 512 and poses no problems, yet I can't resist clicking the 1 GIG when playing around with the configuring. Do I really need 1 GIG or is that overkill?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Corey.

First of most people that rant about alienware probably never owned one to start with. Most people on these forums are happy with theirs and those who've had problems have had them resolved. If your not gonna game then I'd go with the Sentia. Depending on how long you're gonna keep that laptop, I'd either get a gig or two, though a gig should be good for what your doing.

Dont listen to the alienware "horror" stories on this site. Like Unit_5 said. Most are just fabricated. Customer service in my opinion is actually really good. It is better than you will get with other companies. They usually (99%) work with you to fix the problem and in most cases provide free upgrades for parts that are no longer made (i.e.. GPU and Motherboard)

Go with Alienware. You will like it. Bigger screens mean more weight, but if you dont mind the weight, then I recommend you go with the m5550. You will like it.

And Core Duo will help you alot with multitasking and spreadsheets and stuff along with the bigger screen.

So far the customer service has been awsome to me... They know what they are talking about... They do not just read you prompts from a computer screen (like HP did to me)

I jsut ordered an m5550 and the process has been pleasant so far. I always take what I read on the internet with a grain of salt.

Some people may have very well had a bad experience with AW, while others may have had problems resulting from their own doing and try to blame Alienware.

Other folks may not have been able to communicate with AW support because they don't understand the technology themselves let alone convey their problem to the support staff.

I will wait until I get my system to pass judgement. If all goes well with the m5550, I will be replacing at least three of our desktop systems with Alienware products.

If you like the system, give it a try and judge for yourself. Alienware sells thousands of computers and are bound to have some lemons among the bunch. For every slam you read about them on the internet, there are probably hundreds of people that are happy with them.

Thanks for the replies. It is appreciated.

I did order the Sentia M3450. Everything seems to be progressing fine. It's in Phase 3 (pre-production queue)
