Thank you ugg for your very thorough guide.

A quick clarification - I know that lcds require an inverter to function properly... now did you swap the lcd together with inverter or not? I got the impression that you did, and then i got the impression you didn't - I'm kinda confused...

Based on previous work with lcds, I know that there is a cable that plugs into the video card - is this cable attached to the inverter which on the other end plugs into the lcd? (or is the cable that attaches lcd to the video card effectively the inverter?)

Also, a question about your ocz ram upgrade - did you notice any problems like windows stop screens? Happened to me twice, but I think it was due to video... I think a guy here calling himself WilliamG also had some problems so he returned the ram....I'm trying to confirm that there is NOTHING wrong w/ the ram...

Sorry for the confusion. I kept the inverters with their original machines. Only the LCD panels were swapped. This was because the 700m's inverter board has LED's on it and the M1210's board does not. The point I was trying to make in my last post was that the connectors on both inverters did look the same, so you MIGHT be able to swap inverters.

There are two cables that connect to the LCD:
1) The flat ribbon-like cable on the back of the LCD is the one that connects to the graphics card. It starts on the back of the LCD near the top and is routed through the hinge and under the keyboard.
2) The backlight cable is two white wires on the lower right edge of the LCD. One end is connected to the LCD (permanently or with a plastic connector) and the other end has a plastic connector that connects to the right side of the inverter.

The left side of the inverter has a connector on the back that mates with a cable routed from the hinge. It appears the inverter board has more functions than just the inverter itself.

I run Linux almost all of the time with close to 100% RAM usage (VMWare takes a lot) but I occasionally boot to Windows. So far I have had NO problems with the OCZ RAM in Linux or Windows. It's possible I just got lucky, so YMMV.

Ugg - I noticed one more thing - you have Nec DVD-RW. What did you do about the curve by the corner? Does the nec have that curve too?

He most probably swapped the drive cover over...

Is the 700M screen and the 710M the same thing? Does the screen fit snugly in the M1210?Meaning, are they exactly the same size? Also, could I buy a 710 LCD from a company that sells LCDs and just do it that way?

710m is just a little differently styled than the 700m, but same otherwise...

I take it you dont have the AV package? The wirig for the camera etc are part of the wireing harness for the lcd.

Was this part covered in your typing as I did not read through all the messages?

I was thinking about this and future upgrades to hddvd/bluray drives, and dreading a sharp corner. But i guess you could swap the covers like SPEED mantioned.

Problem is that I wanted to sell the drive that came w/ the computer to help defray the cost of the upgrade... but if I need to do a cover swap... its not so interesting... Also, it says on the cover what type of drive it is, and that can make the resale of the machine when the time comes a little harder to do...

To answer some questions...

No, I do not have the AV package so my instructions do not cover that. I would imagine that DELL just routed a flat cable behind the LCD to the camera & mic, but I have not seen it so I cannot say for sure.

From the pictures I have seen it looks like the bezel & lid are cut to fit the camera. Is this the case? I wondering if you could buy the AV parts and upgrade yourself or if you have to swap the bezel and/or lid.

Regarding the NEC DVD+-RW, I was a bit worried when I saw the slanted drive cover. Fortunately you can just swap it with the other drive. It does say "DVD ROM" on the cover but that doesn't bother me. It's what's on the inside that counts.

After nearly a year, I have decided to repurchase the m1210 and do the screen swap. I would love it if ugg would tell us any new info this year of experience has given him.

A few questions:
Have you had any problems?

How is battery life?

Can you provide pics of your setup pref even better if you can compare it with an unmodded m1210, so the rest of us can make a decision about this.

If ugg would be willing to do this, (maybe even a few of us can chip in and donate a few bucks for the effort) if we can get a few pics of the internal parts - wat was swapped.... (I am probably going to buy a 710m screen on ebay and then sell of the m1210 screen... so only need pics of the m1210).

I am planning to put in a decent amount of research into this in order to make this as smooth as possible, including any potential issues we have later - like brightness....

I will PM ugg to make sure he knows about this new post and can respond here for us....

yeah i agree, this is something i would really like to do, a 700m screen can be had off ebay for around 100 bucks and i think that is a great investment. We just need as much info as humanly possible. What are the drawbacks of doing this (if any)?
