Acer Ferrari 5000 or IBM t60p.

A question I need everyone's help on! I am a networking major and I need a laptop that is great for linux and windows. I also want a laptop to play games with. Battle field 2 , CS:S , Fear. ext. The acer has x1600 and the T60p has the firegl 5200 (from what i hear it is like the 1600 but under clocked.) what will be better for gaming and what is just the better laptop in your minds?

It's heressy to compare an Acer with an IBM!

not so much the Ferrari Lineup...

I had the Ferrari 4000, and there are many many things I preferred about it to my T42P.

It was built very well (although not the tank an IBM is)
While the keyboard on the IBM is better in my opinion(especially with the Thinklight), the rubberized palmrest is far superior to the hard plastic of my IBM (and don't get me started on the smooth plastic of my E1705...blech!)
It was much better for multimedia than the IBM could ever hope to be (good speakers, comparatively speaking)

If you were to get an Acer Ferrari, you'd be very happy with it. But, for me, in the simplest terms, it was a Ferrari...a weekend warrior. I went back to a T43 for my daily driver, but there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss that Ferrari...

I would go with the T60p.

If your primary purpose is gaming then the Ferrari has a slight edge. The screen is fairly nice and the card is optimized for gaming. Personally I would (and did) choose the T60P since it is a stronger all-around performer that runs cooler, has longer battery life and has the wonderful thinkpad build quality. Bear in mind that the FireGL's are not optimized for gaming and can be problemattic at times unless you play with the drivers.

It's basically a personal choice though. Which one are you most comfortable with?

Another factor to consider - when do you need it by? The Ferrari 5000 will not be out until October.

So if you need it right away and these are your two options then go for the T60P. If you are thinking between Acer and Lenovo then bear in mind that the Ferrari is very similar to the Travelmate 8204WLMi.

The T60p is a better machine, all-around. Build quality is superior, ergonomics are superior, it runs Novel Linux (and is supported by Lenovo), you can choose two screen sizes (14 in, and the 15 in Flexview option is the best non-glossy LCD you can buy). Regarding the FireGL GPU, you can tweak it to perform just as the X1600, as it has the same number of pipelines, etc.
