I got an m1710 with just the regular audio. I have heard that for 25 bcuks i can do a simple software upgrade to upgrade the audio devide. I am jsut wondering if it is worth it. is there a noticeable audio difference? please let me know.

It does not upgrade the device...it just adds some software to the device you have. I have seen and heard both and it may be worth $25...but only because $25 is nothing.

No. No noticeable improvment. The only thing you really get is the Creative media player thingy...

People say purchasing the software helps reduce "crackling/popping" noises in BF2.

Actually coming from a SB 2ZS Notebook on my Gen1, I was expecting the worst when I got this new sound chip. Then I got the audigy upgrade. No more pops, clicks, the audio is no longer distorted on my laptop when playing movies or music and the best part.... Hardware EAX for my games... That is nice. Plus you get an equalizer that does very well replacing the lack of bass and treble controls in the standard volume control.

I have cracking/popping in other games (SWAT 4, for one). I tried the Toshiba drivers that some have recommended. The sound is definitely better and more um... surround-y.

But I still have the popping/clicking. Tried to buy the Audigy software but it has rejected all of my credit cards so I'll have to wait until Monday to contact Creative over the phone.

Link to buy it?

Where can I go to get this software. Did not see it on Dell for my E1705....

Thanks,

Steve

What system do you have?

I've got a m1710. I paid for the software upgrade, and the supplied CD works great (provided the Sigmatel drivers are already installed). Looking at versions though, the posted link is more recent. It might be because I tried to go from the Sigmatel drivers to the Creative driver that was linked. If I tried a Creative-to-Creative driver update though it might work... /goes to try. <success></success>

I had the upgrade and I still had crackling in BF2 (until I disabled the very feature I bought the upgrade for in the first place, EAX).

The Sigmatel chip is of enough resolution and quality to be able to run at an audigy level. The sigmatel also has enough power to run eax.... thats pretty nice. That is why you have to have the sigmatel sound set installed first..
