Thread Starter
Hi there just got a new XPS 1210 and i nee some help
basically after uninstalling lots of the irrelevant software
and installing my neccessary programmes i have come to realise
tat my DVD-RW Drive is not working properly.

IT can read CDs and DVDs fine .. however Nero cant detect it
the default roxio software also cant see the drive. And when i view
the drive under my computer its just displays as a normal CD-ROM drive!!

However if i go to the Device Manager the name of the Drive is NEC DVD+RW ND-6650A and teh device type is DVD/CD-ROM drive...

anyone care to give me a hand as to how i can solve this

thanks

The only thing I can recommend is to head into the device manager and uninstall the drive. Reboot and let Windows redetect it. I would have suggested a driver/firmware upgrade, but I just checked the NEC site and they said

No drivers are required for Windows® XP (Home, Professional), and Windows 2000, and Windows ME. It isn't necessary to install driver or program for preference setup. DVD and CD writing software must be purchased seperately.
Plus there wasn't any new firmware for that model.

Really? I don't see the 6650 listed anywhere in their series of firmware updates.

If there are a few new firmwares for the 6650 I would appreciate it if you would post the link to them since I'd be interested in doing an update.

You can also brick (kill) your drive this way.

That's sorta what I was thinking.

I've seen it where windows will detect a dvd burner as a cd rom drive as well. format/reinstall worked on that one. some application you removed may have done it. did your system come with sonic or roxio and did you remove it?

yeah guys thanks, solved this couple of days ago by Offing, unplugging drive, reboot shutdown and than reinstall drive and boot again. THis did the job.
