Hi there
I am going to be using a notebook for general purposes like Word processing, email, movies, music etc. NO GAMING
For the above purposes would having a Duo processes really make life simpler compared with the Solo?
Thanks

For what you are doing, not much at all, you will be just as good off with a core solo. Unless you mean movies as in encoding DVDs into different formats.

Nope, just watching movies

u should get a duel core gaming rig

How much do you save by coing core solo?
If you do any multitasking(many programs open at once) you'll probably see a slight diffrence with a core duo.
And could you see your self doing more processor intense work some time in the futur?

well if just watching movies and surfing solo is fine. 1 core is enough to do some multitasking but if duelcore is not that much more expensive then get duelcore

Maybe having 3 Explorer browsers at the same time, other times it may be having Outlook open with word processor. I dont think this is any heavy duty stuff. Im not going to be using like 5 different programs at the same time. Probably use 3 programs max at the same time. Duo is about 100 dollars extra but im right on the budget area with the solo

You will be absolutely fine with the Solo. From what you've said, there is no reason to buy a dual-core CPU right now. Hell, from your requirements, you would be fine with a 900-1000 Mhz machine (and even that would be overkill).

jojo....hate to pee on this thread's parade. but may I ask why? Wouldn't it be simpler to have 1 firefox window with 15 tabs and 1 multi-protocol IM client (say gaim or trillian) open....that would save you oh so much (and most possibly ram)

/pee on thread

back on topic: yeah...a solo will do it for you.

ur right about the firefox part....that would be smarter... but i dont know... iguess its a personal preference to have IE... i dont like the placement of the home and refresh button or something... its not the same order as IE ... lol

and about trillian n such... they dont have ALL the feature of each client... certain things *last time i used one was like a year ago*... and it always had problems with file sharing.... fonts... display pictures... nudging , buzzing , webcams..
etc..

Im not really familiar with these processors so could someone explain to me what the Solo is and what the Duo is? What makes each stand out or a benefit to have?

Same processor but the duo has 2 cores. Meaning that it can work 2 threads at the same time. So if you are running 1 processor intense application it will pretty much be running on one of the cores while the other core is used by lets say IE. It's pretty much like having 2 processors. But according to your current requirements that would be overkill.

Duo or Solo

I’m very happy with my Sony, but I’ve been thinking of buying a duo. My solo is doing so well that I've changed my mind. Here are all the things that I can do with my solo processor at the same time and it does not freeze-up or crash.

1.Download very large photos files from three different CD/DVD external burners attached to my laptop via USB 2.0 while burning a DVD.
2.Run photoshop and photomechanic.
3.Browse the Internet with as many as 10 explorer windows open at the same time.
4.Run Microsoft Word cut and paste.

Does it matter whether its T1000 or T1350 or whatever it is? Would you also say that upgrading to a DUO Processor would be a waste of money and just plain needless for me. I dunno. I like new stuff ahaha but if its really not necessary I would feel safe with getting the solo

Duo vs Solo

Jun85,

I’m a photojournalist working with very large digital photos and tight deadlines. I would like to have a Duo but why waste money selling my solo to buy a new Duo computer.

yes would have to agree with mrkii1n. i recently received my t1350 (1.86ghz) toshiba solo lappy and it EASILY outperforms my dell 2.13ghz pentium m; i can multitask ALOT better with it and it's a bit zipper too.

The processor has really changed in the past year. I bought an M50/M55 just last year with a Centrino processor. Now, I have to get another one and doing some research I come across Core Duo, Core Solo, Core 2, and "Vista Compatible" haha and other stuff.
