mythtv box setup....

So after I realized my desktop (p3 866mhz) is quite a bit too slow to be a PVR, i am now thinking I'll just use my laptop (see sig for spec). I dont want anything fancy, I simply wanna be able to record shows while i am busy/away so they are ready for watching when I am.

Naturally this requires a PCMCIA TV tuner...and as I am looking on newegg there are quite a few ranging from $40 to $100 (haven't checked ebay yet). So I guess my question comes down to what tuner card do i get for my laptop so that it works with linux (and mythtv) out of the box....

Check Myth's Wiki, they have some hardware stuff on there including reccomended equipment. Your Desktop should work as a Myth Backend though from what I read. You could then use your laptop as the FrontEnd, but that depends on your personal setup, from previous conversations with you I am not sure if you are willing to give up your desktop as a dedicated server(Myth/File/Print/Whatever) or not.

Uh for DVD quality MPEG2 you would need a wired connection to your laptop for the Back/Front end setup, wireless would have problems cutting it no matter how good the signal unfortunatly.

the desktop will NOT be a dedicated server. my dad still uses it on a daily basis for internet/office work, however it doesn't mean that i can't use it as a server for printing/file.

the arch wiki explained the difference between front and back ends...but i am still really confused. can you put this in layman's terms for me? the bottom line is that i don't care for any fancy special features....just wanna be able to record scheduled shows.

Hmm if the desktop will be in use for other means, then I wouldnt reccomend it for a backend.

The backend handles the actual scheduling, recording, etc, and does not need a WM as it has no GUI. The Frontend takes the reocrded shows and displays them, as well as handling plugins etc. When you look at screenshots, you are looking at the Front End. It gets a little hard to define because it doesnt fit the traditional Backend/Frontend paradigm I am used to from programming.

Keep in mind this is based off my own reading on the material, not personal experience(yet)
