Beep, beep, bong, 16 times during boot...

I have a 7426 and have a dumb problem with XP. Somewhere along the line I have installed something that causes my system to beep and bong constantly while booting into XP and during use. It's not a bios thing it's actually xp system sounds that seem to happen when ever I do stuff like close a window or click on a screen etc.

This happened 4 months ago and a simple system rollback got rid of the problem but this time I really don't want to rollback and delete other programs.

Almost sure it's not a virus or spyware (I have tested with several apps and never found a problem).

Just wondering if someone else here has run into an app or driver that causes this. Its starts early in xp bootup but doesn't seem to be app in startup...

I have Vista on another partition with no problems.

Any ideas? Right now I just turn the sound off.

I hate to be so obvious, but have you gone to Control Panel (Classic View) / Sounds and Audio Devices / Sounds / Program Events / Start Windows? And from there specify "none" for start up sounds?

Sometimes installing sound card software will change your start-up sounds. Creative's Sound Blaster Series comes to mind.

You can go into Windows sounds and find whichever midi or wav it is, delete it or whatever, if it's a Windows system sound. When I was running Win98, I used to go in and insert and rename the 1st minute or so of WipeOut to the wav Windows was using at startup....just to remind me what I was dealing with.

thx for the replies

I rebooted with the sound and actually heard the bing and bongs close to 40 times at bootup.

Unfortuneatly its not just boot up, as during regular use I get sounds randomly when clicking on windows or doing other things.

I'll keep looking, thanks again for the replies.

The way you describe, I imagine it must sound almost like a car alarm going off. Your laptop is not "hot" is it? Just kidding!

Pharlaptop dead on

After almost giving up I went into system sounds and found the darn settings were doing it.

It had a sound for programs opening and closing ENABLED.

I have ZERO idea how this happened, obviously I would never do that myself. Still wondering what caused those setting....

Thx again,
