M1210 Manual Media Direct Installation (+ALL CODEC)

Thread Starter
BACKGROUND:
What happen here was when I recieve my M1210 (having knowledge that M1210 MediaDirect could be reinstall) I instantly swap the 100GB HD w/ my Acer 8204 120GB, then the 1GB ram for the 2GB. I know the next step would be the CPU but I like the small 2300! Anyhow I call Dell spend about 5 hours on the phone the customer service well some was GREAT some was a dumass trying to get me to install media experience saying it was media direct. Anyhow after my last it ended up being an awesome service but with a conclusion of (We have issue of having media direct not install on some hard drive).

-----------------------
CD REQUIRE:
Windows Reinstallation CD: (incase you screwed up on the partition)
Media Direct Reinstallation: (M1210 Version
-----------------------
NOTE:
I was able to install Media Direct with only a 800MB HD! but the problem is Media direct uses the extra space for hibernation so it boots up FAST.
------------------------
Instruction:
First thing is how you partition your Hard drive, Media Direct Has to be on a Primary Partition not EXTENDED!!!
Therefore If your doing a fresh installation create only 1 Partition and leave the rest for Disk Management in windows! For some reason if you create anymore Windows automatically partition them into EXTENDED.
MY SET UP
X= Primary Partition X= EXTENDED Partition
40GB 25GB 47GB 1.5GB/
(Knowing that you can make a at least 800-1500MB Primary Partition we'll go on)
How to Partition it:
1. Right click MY COMPUTER and go to Manage
2. Click on Disk Management (under storage)
note: It's a smarter option to partition all the extended so you have only have room left for media direct. Incase something goes wrong your left over space will be stuck in the end where it has the slowest access time.
3. Right click the free space and click create a partition
note: make there is a primary partition BUTTON THIS ISN'T A OPTION! It's A MUST! if not then delete the extended and repartition it with left over space. Or fresh install.
4. Click primary and make sure you format with it NTFS/ LETTER DRIVE:X! and do quick format to speed things up! 800-1500MB space will all work. The more space you leave (MAX is 1500!) the faster it will boot up next time because it uses the extra space to hibernate... that's why you see it EXIT everytime!
5. Now insert media direct and CANCEL OUT! note this is a manual installation.
REASON: the media direct installation didn't work for me nor did it create it's own drive...
6. okay go to my computer right click the cd drive and click open. there should be 2 extractable files EXP1 and EXP2 (name will vary) anyhow click EXP1 and it will EXTRACT watch your CD lightning until it stops for more then 10 seconds click the second one and EXTRACT!
NOTE: remember this drive will only appear until you boot in media direct then the drive X will disappear.
7.Anyhow go to C:\windows\system32 copy taskmgr into X:\windows\system32
8. download any codec you like or use http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...Codec_Pack.htm and throw on a flash drive but in this case I'm gonna throw it on drive C:\ <- (should be your window)
9. Last thing before you restart is defrag drive X! it helps a lot in the long term since you won't get another chance.
10. take out the cd restart and click the Media Direct button. If it doesn't work then you probably partition it wrong!
note: media direct button boots up on the second primary partition! therefore you could have 1 Primary (windows) extended (as many really) and another primary. -Go any question related to this please post below -
11: assuming that it boots up! do ALT+del+ctrl (in no special order )
and go to file run type in: c:\windows\explorer.exe and then browse to Drive D: and double click on the codec and MAKE SURE! you install on drive C:\! because D: & C: are swap during the Media Direct functionality.
NOTE on k-codec: I did a minimal installation. I recommand doing that too or do a playback and uncheck the Media classic player since you won't need it taking up 6MB.
That's it really... even dell High-Class XPS/dell on call couldn't restore it! :P!
Now you can DIVX files and whatever media direct allows you to access !

i have an m1210. i have tried to reinstall media direct several times. i have used dells instructions (what a waste of time) and i tried yours.

i didnt get any errors. everything seemed to work. however, when i tried to boot into media direct, the splash screen came up and then it booted into windows. i am not directing my anger at you as i appreciate your help and suggestions but this is really starting to piss me off i have had my new lappy for less than 3 weeks and have already reinstalled the os 5 times... just trying to get a feature that i will probably never use working

my lappy is my first dell and i have to say that overall i love it... but they really need to get their act together. if they didnt overload my lappy with bloatware, i wouldnt be spending way too much time on the phone and searching through forums trying to find the answer to this b.s.

oh and i set the partition size to 1300 mb.

that is not enough space. it needs to be 1500 mb. that is the magic number. other than that you are set. I had this problem as well

It will work with only 800MB I tried that... Remember this is a manual installation. But it uses the rest to hibernate to boot up faster. That's werid... Make sure you didn't insert the dell Media Repair disk... and type cd \md2 repair shit... it kills it completely.
Okay this is what i want you to do. I want you to have 1 Partiton that is primary and create/don't create a extend and create a BLANK 1.4GB primary partition and tried to boot up in media direct. What it should say is it is missing a bootloader or an os file. Sounds like the media direct button isn't ACCESING your drive. once again make sure it's the second Primary partiton that's the drive media direct boots up from NOT EXTENDED! and when you create your partition make sure it doesn't say logicial! until that kind of errors happen there is NO WAY your ever gonna get media direct to install.. so seek out that error! it's gonna save you some time in the long run

same dude... i have mine for 1 week and about 5 OS installation until I got media direct to work. dell XPS support won't be able to help you at all. Also I need more information about your laptop. Did you swap the hard drive as well? and if that what brand? i got seagate in mine.
